Question about Disk Staging / temp. staging area

HI,

Running NB 7.0 on a Win2003 server, with a Quantum Superloader 3

(DLT4 - tape robot).

I hope someone can give me an advise until now - I have been using tapes for backup,

I have bought some big USB discs and connected those to my (Master)server.

If I 'connect' those under "Storage Units" i have the option to  "Enable temp. staging area"

but what I would like is -  to end up with a setup with the backup going into:

a Storage Unit group (consisting of e.g. 4 of the USB drives ) with a short retention and

the move my backup-data to the "final" dest. on DLT tapes with a longer retention

(e.g. 2 weeks for my Cumm. backup and 2 months for my FULL backup) once

the data are on tape - the data should be expired from the Storage Unit Group .

Is this possible ?

Mixed short/long term retentions supported with Storage Lifecycle Policy and not with just BasicDisk Storage Unit

HI ,

Thank you for the quick reply.

Should I then make 2 groups inside 'Storage Unit Group', 1 for long and 1 for short retention ?

And will 'Storage Lifecycle Policy' know to take 'source' data from the

Storage Unit Group(my USB disks ) or do I have to define this somewhere ?

Unless you have a lot of excess time in your backup schedules, I think you might be disappointed with this solution.

USB drives are slow and doubly so if you have SATA drives in them.  You will need to ensure that no backup jobs are writing to that USB drive before you attempt to destage from it or your tape drive performance will SERIOUSLY suffer.
