Question about duplication to tape

MickBoosh
Level 5

Hi,

I am getting some 190 errors which upon closer inspection have been created as the images on the staging area have expired before it has duplicated to tape. I have always been under the impression that duplication to tape takes place quickly (the same day) after it's been backed up to disk and then once the watermark is hit on the staging area it is a candidate to be deleted from disk?

The backup for this particular policy was created 1 week ago, so it's not going to tape for a week, is that right? Our staging policy runs from midnight to 5pm daily so it should have enough time. Also all the problems are from the same policy, which does SQL transaction logs.

Is a week too long for it to be duplicated? Should it be quicker than this?

If you are using DSSU, in the storage unit, you haveto create a window (very similar to a normal policy) that allows when the duplication can run.

Providing there is an 'open' window, the staging from disk to tape will hape reasonbly quickly.

OK, just re-read the post, seems you have a window.

Can you right click the stu and try manual relocation ?

Its only started happening in the last 3 weeks or so though, and it's not all the time, we get maybe 1 or 2 a day so it's managing most from the policy but seems it's the odd one.

Is this policy using the same DSSU as others, or is the DSSU new also ?

You say its only the past 3 weeks, but previously mentioned the backup was created 1 week ago ...  I'm a bit confused.

Is this issue only affecting certain clients / backups ???

What version of NBU are you running ....

Check the retention period set on the Default application schedule for you SQL policy just in case it is very short

Wouldnt generally expect anything to be expired from a DSSU before it has been duplicated, even in a disk full condition, so it sounds like a retention issue

Yes serveral policies use it, we've ahd the DSSU for years

You say its only the past 3 weeks, but previously mentioned the backup was created 1 week ago ...  I'm a bit confused.

I mean the backup that created the particluar image that failed to duplicate ran 1 week ago, the problems in general started about 3 weeks ago

Is this issue only affecting certain clients / backups

Yes, one particular SQL Transaction Log policy

What version of NBU are you running

7.1 on Windows 2003 r2 x86

Check the retention period set on the Default application schedule for you SQL policy just in case it is very short

Thanks, the default application schedule is for 1 week where the Automatic Backup is for 2 weeks. I've now changed it to 2 weeks

Wouldnt generally expect anything to be expired from a DSSU before it has been duplicated, even in a disk full condition, so it sounds like a retention issue

Me too.

Thanks for the help so far :)

Ok - so we had a 1 week retention but you did say that the staging runs daily from midnight to 5pm - what is the frequency set to on the staging (very ? hours / days)?

1 hour.

Can you check the catalog to see if the images have actually been duplicated to tape or not.

Just do a search on the catalog for these SQL backups - this isolates if the duplication has actually kicked in twice and has been done once then fails next time

This could indicate that there is a bug or some other intervention causing it (such as a manual relocation being run)

Dont think we have covered it so what version and patch level of NetBackup are you on?

#edit# see you are on 7.1 - which patch level if any

#edit 2# could you post the details from the Admin log on the Master for a period just either side of the 190 failure

Sorry, which type of report shall I run? Images on Media? Not sure how to "search on the catalog"

Also, no patch levels, just 7.1 vanilla

Yes, give me a few minutes

Thanks

In the NetBackup Admin Console go to the catalog section.

Do a search for this client - leaving the options as verify and primary copy

Look for any of the SQL Transaction log backups to see if any exist.

If they do, and they show as being on tape then it has duplicated them but for some reason tried again - if not then they have expired before being dulicated which is a fault

#edit# just make sure that the date range is enough to cover the backups and duplication when the error shows up

Please remember that the Retention level selected in the schedule applies to Disk and Tape copy.

The only difference between disk and tape copy is that disk copy can be expired and deleted if successfully duplicated to tape and disk reaches High Water Mark.

Obviously I've annonimised this as best I could, servers are AAAAA or BBBBBBB and master server is <masterserver!>

If I do it from when it backed up on the 15/01/12 it returns a list and they all are still on staging, obviously it doesn't show the backup that caused the problem as it's now expired.

It also pops a box up when it's finished the search and says this

INF - Skipping backup id AAAAAAAA_1326713623, copy 1 is expired.

INF - Skipping backup id AAAAAAAA_1326713582, copy 1 is expired.

INF - Skipping backup id AAAAAAAA_1326713540, copy 1 is expired.

Here's a quick copy and paste from the search

OK - another 4 questions:

1. It may just be how it has gone into the file but do these both exist?:

F:\Disk_Staging_Area
F:\Dis

2. All backups shown in the log relate to 15th Jan so have expired - can you see those image files in the staging area?

3. How oftern do you see the DSSU staging job actually run?

4. Do you allow disk spanning - how many disk units are involved?

1. hmmm F:\Disk_Staging_Area I'm familiar with and it does exist, however f:\dis doesn't and we've never had anything called that

2. After searching through the staging area, I can't see them.

3. It's pretty much doing duplications all the time while

4. We don't allow disk spanning

#edit 2. I mean from 15th, they are present past this.

To clarify 3. - how often do you see the policy named DSSU_diskstagingname in the activity monitor?

(substitue diskstagingname with the namke of your disk staging storage unit)

To clarify 1. Could you run bpstulist -U -M masterservername

out post the output please

Just noticed your entry about the results from the catalog - so as well as my questions above could you do the same catalog search against Copy 2 rather than primary to see if they are also on tape.

Thanks
