Set file history to "no", stopping Netbackup updating its catalog database with each file that is being backed up from the NDMP box, which, for large NDMP backups, can impact on performance.
Add "SET HIST=N" to the first line in the NDMP Policy / Class File List.
The downside is you will not be able to restore individual files for your NDMP host, but only the full volume(s) specified.
For more information on "SET HIST=N" option, refer to the Netbackup System Administrator's Guide for NDMP, Page 26.
For more information on NDMP environment variables - refer to the Netbackup System Administrator's Guide for NDMP, Page 43
DIRECT=y, DIRECT(DAR) is an optimized data recovery operation that allows data to be recovered in the middle of a tape set without the need to parse the tape set sequentially. This significantly reduces recovery time of large backups. For this your need to set DIRECT=y as an application variable.
HIST=y, HIST determines where a file history is created and required for index recovery. This value must be set to y, which is also the default setting.
