Restore Entire VM via AIR Data

backup-botw
Level 6

I have a decommissioned Netbackup site where all backups were written to disk and then replicated over to my new primary site. I can see the data that I want to use to restore this VM, but when I run through the process and click start recovery the job will launch, go active and then do nothing. What am I missing in this process? From what I understand it should be pretty straight forward as the images are already imported when using AIR.

You should get a better idea of what to look at when it fails and provides an error code.

Try :

vxlogview -p 51216 -X "jobid=3223808"

3223808 is the jobid in the activity monitor.

After 7hrs and 8 mins it failed with a status code 50.

That command just hung. Are the quotes required? Does the job have to be still running?

watsons

The job seems to have "stuck" at the very beginning... can you provide more details of how you performed the restore, such as policy type (assume VMware) and the options you choose.

Also enable verbose=5 bprd logs on master server because that is the request being sent to.

Yes the quotes are required.

That command doesnt return anything. It just hangs for me.

Assuming the VM was backed-up using 'allow individual file restore', then how about trying an individual file restore of just one file from the VM backup to the master server or media server, or a.n.other server - to prove that the VM backup is at least readable.

If you can answer these questions, we may be able to be more specific:

1) Exact O/S and NetBackup versions of master

2) Exact O/S and NetBackup versions of the media server (if the media server is not the master/media)

3) Exact version of the target ESX server.

4) Exact O/S and NetBackup versions of the guest O/S that is/was within the VM to be restored.

You may have other problems in your environment if that command hangs and never completes.

How have you verified that the DR site is 'working'?

Solaris 10 and Netbackup 7.6.0.2

Linux 2.6.32-504.16.2.el6.x86_64 #1 SMP Tue Mar 10 17:01:00 EDT 2015 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux and Netbackup 7.6.0.2

5.5 Update 1

Not sure as the server no longer exists. I do know it was Windows and backup using the VMware API as opposed to the client. Most likely 2003 or 2008.

Try a single file restore from the VM style backup?

Have you tried an instant restore of the machine?

Thats what I am working on now is ensuring we can restore from replicated disk backups.

That part works without issue...

Hello backup-botw,

what I can propose to you,why do not execute the restore from commandline,  with the bprestore command in version 7.5 or the nbrestorevm command in 7.6,  for being capable to gather more information about the error with the -L option, that will trace a log file about the restore.

bprestore writes informative and error messages to a progress-log file
if you create the file prior to the execution of the bprestore command
and then specify the file with the -L progress_log option. If
bprestore cannot restore the requested files or directories, you can
use the progress log to find the reason for the failure.

I believe this is the same for nbrestorevm, where you can take the options for your environment.

You will also find  the options -L for the progress_log file

From the command and reference guide:

SYNOPSIS
For VSphere Restore:
nbrestorevm -vmw -C vm_client [-S master_server] [-O] [-R rename_file]
[-L progress_log [-en]] [-k "keyword phrase"] [-s mm/dd/yyyy
[ hh:mm:ss]] [-e mm/dd/yyyy [ hh:mm:ss]] [-w [ hh:mm:ss]] [-vmtm
vm_transport_mode] [-vmserver vm_server] [-vmproxy vm_proxy] [-vmpo]
[-vmtd] [-vmfd] [-vmbz] [-vmvmxd] [-vmkeephv] [-vmid] [-vmsn] [-vmrb]
[-vcd] [-vcdred] [-vcdovw] [-vcdrte] [-vcdtemplate] [-vcdlfree]
[-vcdremv]

I hope for you,  that you will get more meaningful information using the comandline by approching the your solution step by step and by better understanding your results.

best regards,

Cruisen

I dont want to do the restore via command line as that is now how the Windows/VM engineers would do restores. I havent had any time to get back to this so if I run into anymore issues I will let you know. Last time I tried it I can restore files, but not the entire VM.
