I have recently replaced a HPUX media server with a Windows 2008 R2 media server. With that I assigned the drives, from a Quantum DXi 8500, to the Windows box. The DXi acts as a VTL and we have a Quantum i2000 for physical tapes. I have also decom'd the HPUX media server. When I do a rescan it comes up complete with no errors. But when I run a test job:
8/19/2015 3:08:50 PM - Info nbjm(pid=6108) starting backup job (jobid=113496) for client %SERVER%, policy z-test-%SERVER%, schedule Onetime

Everything appears to be zoned correctly with the SAN storage. Any help would be great.

So the STU
8/19/2015 3:08:50 PM - requesting resource%SERVER%-hcart-robot-tld-0-DXi8500-1
Is configured as the following.
Label: %server%-hcart-robot-tld-0-DXi8500-1
Storage Unit Type: NDMP
Host Connection: %server%
Number of Drives: 80
On Demand Only: no
Max MPX/drive: 1
Density: hcart - 1/2 Inch Cartridge
Robot Type/Number: TLD / 0
Max Fragment Size: 1048576 MB
NDMP attach host: DXi8500-1
If you run a STANDARD job against an NDMP stu you will get that exact error.
The stu you have selected is the "NDMP" backend of teh Dxi used for its Path to Tape.
We configure the DXI and its attached Physical library as NDMP to get them to duplicate to each other.
For regular jobs to it, you'd likely want to use the OS connection.

Make sure your storage unit/drives/tapes all have the same 'type' or 'density' as it is sometimes known, i,e hcart, hcart2 etc.
08-19-2015 01:08 PM
They have the same type and density, hcart. When I open the Storage Unit Type of Media Manager, the media server is not listed under "Media Server".

nbemmcmd -listhosts -verbose
from your media server or master server. does the media server show up as "active for disk and tape"? If not, you will need to set them properly, specifically need to be "active for tape" since it is VTL.

The proble with replacing ALL media server names with the same %server% makes it impossible to assist.
Rather choose different names for each media server, e.g.
media1
media2
media3
We need to see STU config for the one where the job is failing :
%SERVER%-hcart-robot-tld-0-DXi8500-1
The Host Connection: field is important as this need to match the actual media server name where you issued 'tpconfig -l' command.
The media server for which you ran 'tpconfig' needs 2 Storage Units,
one for
Robot Type/Number: TLD / 0
and another one for:
Robot Type/Number: TLD / 1
