Any tape drives that are found will be listed below the heading.

Before you run any NBU commands (e.g. scan), verify that Device Manager can see the devices and that drivers for tape drives are installed.

I presume this is SAN attached.

Basic steps.

Connect cables, zone library to server.

To check connection to server, run the scan command (volmgr\bin\scan)

Check scan output for changer and drives

If it appears - good

If it doesn't appear - not good  >>  Not a NBU issue at this point, troubleshhot from a hardware/ SAN point of view.

Once seen in scan, run wizard to configure.

If its SAN connected download a microsoft utility called "fcinfo" this will give you all the fiber channel HBA WWNS connected to the windows host.

Check the device manager for any Unknown devices Quantum usually uses HP tape drives and if you dont have the HP drives you will need to go grab them.

Also run something simple like <install Path>/Veritas/volmgr/bin/scan -tape or scan -changer this should show any devices that Netbackup can use if there is nothing in this list its usually a driver problem or the devices are not properly connected to the Media server.

If you can validate that the drives or correct in the Device manager (unknown changer is acceptable), and scan -changer/-tape return as expecte, you can simply run the Tape configuration wizard and it should find all the devices.

From the device guide.

The following steps describe a general method for attaching devices to a Windows
computer. The Microsoft Windows device applications available on the server
that you use in these steps may differ depending on your Windows operating
system.
To attach devices to a Windows system
1 Use the appropriate Windows application to obtain information on any
currently attached SCSI devices.
2 If you attach a new robotic library or drive to a NetBackup media server,
follow the vendor’s instructions for attaching the device.
Shut down the server and physically attach the supported device. Ensure that
SCSI targets and termination settings are consistent with adapter card and
peripheral vendor recommendations.
3 Reboot the server and answer the prompts for adapter card peripheral
configuration options. Watch the display to ensure that the adapter card
recognizes the attached peripherals.
4 If you add drives, install the tape drivers and use the appropriate Windows
application to verify that the drive was recognized.

Attaching devices to the server is not covered in great details by Symantec, because this is an operating system task.

You connect the cables, and zone in the devices to the server - if you need assistance on this part speak to your san guys or swich vendor.

To see the drivers, look at the devices in Device Manager.

Douglas has suggested a number of steps. Have you considered/tried any of his advice? Start by checking Windows Device Manager. Which make/model tape drives in the robot? Which make/model hba in W2008 server? You can also download and install hba management tool from hba vendor, e.g. Qlogic's Sansurfer. Initial OS/Device configuration is outside of NBU control.

Oh - by the way - there IS a Windows chapter in the Device Config Guide.

This chapter includes the following topics:
■ Before you begin on Windows
■ About tape device drivers on Windows
■ Attaching devices to a Windows system

I know that it does not give you the detailed info that you need, but it does tell you to use OS tools/applications to verify devices.

Best to obtain tape drives from your tape manufacturer (probably HP or Quantum).

After running

scan  -tape command the output says ----> SDT TAPE
