Unable to take backup on multiple tape drives

Hi All,

We are using a netbackup 7.1 with 8 tape drives of HCART and HCART2.  

Unfortunately backup as well as restore is only happening from a single drive which is of HCART type.

Maximun cuncurrent drives is set to 8 on the storage unit which does not seem to be of any help.

No orphaned drives

No orphaned media

No orphaned STUs

Need your intervention to help  me resolve this issue.

You need a minimum of 2 Storage Units - one with density hcart and another with density hcart2.

Are all drives connected to one server or more than one media server (I have never seen any server that can actually push data fast enough to 8 drives simultaneously)?
Each media server will need a STU with correct density - 2 per media server if attached to both drive types.

Backups can either be sent to specific STUs (in policy attributes) or else you can create STU group and and choose that as backup destination.

Please post your STU config - on master run:

Please try and provide as much details as possible when starting a post - here is a good detailed template ...

1.   The exact error message (if an error is given)

2.   During which type of operation does the problem occur ?  For example, Backup, Duplication, Vault, Restore etc.

3.   At what point in the job does the issue occur, for example, right at the beginning.

4.   Which system(s) are involved? For example, Master Server, Media Server - Please provide system names

5.   What version of NetBackup are the servers running ?

6.   What type of operating system are the servers running, and what version (including patch and kernel level) 

7.   Please submit the support report from the master and any relevant Media Servers in the environment.

8.   Is this a reoccurring issue ?

9.   What was the system doing at this time ?

10.  Please send in the contents of the details tab in the Activity Monitor for the job.

11.  What logs or screenshots are available?

12.  Has this worked previously?  If so, when was the last time it DID work?

13.  Have there been any environmental; system; or configuration changes?

14.  When did the problem begin?

15.  How often does the problem occur?

16.  Is a similar configuration working properly?

17.  If applicable, are you running the job to/from disk or tape, if tape, is it a VTL

(Just ignore any questions that are N/A )

What are the details, you have multiple tape drives of different densities, therefore they should be in mutiple STUs.

How many drives do you have (how many hcart / how many hcart2) ?

What density are the media set to ?

A STU is contains only one density of drive, if you had 1 hcart and 7 hcart2, then yes, only  drive could be used.  However, this does not explain the restore - a restore does not use a STU ...

What is the output of :

Yes - you have only one hcart drive, all the rest are hcart2 - and no DLT at all!

Number of choice here - change the tapes to match the drives or match the drives to match the tapes

Bother done relatively easily

Looking at your media selection you may want to change the drives and then also deal with the DLT tapes

let us know which you prefer and I will give you the appropriate procedure

I see 2 x LTO4's (hcart) and 6 LTO5's (hcart2).

As you have discovered, NBU needs different media for different drive densities.

If you have LTO4 tapes that you want to use in the LTO5 drives, you will need to configure everything as hcart.

Your hcart STU should have maximum drives set to 2. 

To see why only one drive is used (and not 2), check 'nbrbutil -dump' output to see if there are any orphaned drive allocations.

We have seen last week how such a media allocation is reducing the number of drives that can be used.

Please see what the physical status and location for BAK092 is.
If it is NOT in use anywhere, clear the allocation:

nbrbutil -releaseMDS 374

This should allow allocation of both the 2 hcart drives.

The issue seems to have been resolved.

It seemed someone had defined in policy, to use only HCART instead of "any available". I changed it and changed some available media to HCART2 with below command. 

usr/openv/volmgr/bin/vmchange -new_mt HCART2 -m <Media>

Ran the backup, all went fine.
