VCB backup. Proxy is Win 2003. Can I -file- backup a Win 2008 client

A NB 6.5.4 environment.  Media/Proxy server is a Win 2003 Server.   I seem to be able to do a full vmdk backup of the Windows 2008 vcb clients but not a file level.
I am assuming because of problems inherent in having the proxy being older than the client.  Is there a work around for this?   Something other than making a new proxy on a Win 2008?
[All of our Win 2008 machines so far are VM's, no physical Win 2008s]

refer you to this support document.

In it the vmware guest os supported by Netbackup for Vmware lists Windows 2008 32/64bit but you also require ESX 3.5 and VCB 1.5. and support started at NB 6.5.3

I dont think the problem having the client newer than the proxy/media server is the issue.

Read the 6.5.5 release notes for any bug fixes or better supportability in this area. But this should work.

Also take a look at this technote.
