Does anyone have any experience using VCB and backing up RDM's? I have been backing up a VMWare server with RDM's and the backup size yields varying results.
When I backup with Option 3 (Full VM and file) the VMDK appears to be optimized, but only optimizing the space that was never used on the disk. ie if data was once on the disk and deleted, the blocks are not truly zeroed out, so this gets included in the VMDK backup.
When I use Option 0 (File) the backup size is the total size of the LUN containing the RDM.
I expected option 0 to mean file level and not back up all of that slack space.
Can someone tell me if there is a way to not backup the slack space within RDM's, or to regain the space that was once used? I do have VMDK type set to 0 (optimized).
