ACS has a few prerequisites:
- The Nbu client must be installed in the guest OS, with network connection and proper forward/reverse name lookups between the Master/Media servers and the VM.
- VMware Tools must be installed.
- Install the Symantec VSS provider on the virtual machine. (Some would argue this is optional...)
- The Enable file recovery from VM backup option must be enabled.
- The Enable block-level incremental backup option must be disabled.
Perhaps it could be a connection problem between the master and the guest OS VM.
On the other hand, even though MS SQL 2012 is supported at the Nbu client/agent level, it is not yet supported with the current ASC implementation.
This information is, for some reason, not found in any publicly available NetBackup documents.
As a Symantec partner, you should be able to gain access to a document named NetBackup 7.5 Feature Briefing - Application Protection for VMware Virtual Machines. (May ask your SE)

ASC support for MS SQL 2012 is not mentioned in any of the current NetBackup release notes.
Edit: The 7.5.0.5 release notes mentions VMware backups protecting SQL Server 2012. ASC support for MS SQL 2012 appears to be supported now. Hopefully someone in the know may be able to elaborate. (Would have liked for this to have been mentioned under the section titled NetBackup 7.5.0.5 new enhancements in the release notes...)
