WIN32 258 and 1117

None of the SAN volumes on one of my Windows 2003 clients, running NetBackup 6.5.3 (like my Solaris server), can be backed up very well. Each full backup fails with status 1 because of two kinds of errors:
ERR - failure reading file: <file> (WIN32 258: The wait operation timed out. )
ERR - failure reading file: <file> (WIN32 1117: The request could not be performed because of an I/O device error. )

The errors occur even when there is no other activity on the volume.
We are able to otherwise read the files mentioned in the error messages.
Each backup attempt fails on different files.
We can see no pattern in the times of the failures
Of the tens of thousands of files on each volume, fewer than ten usually fail to be read.
We plan to replace the client with a brand new Windows 2008 machine in a few weeks.

To learn more about this problem, my Windows admin wants to increase NetBackup logging, but I want him to talk with Microsoft and our storage vendor first. I would be grateful if you could share your opinion about which fork in this road we should choose.

We chose to update an HBA driver on the client, but before we could test it we moved the data to the Windows 2008 client.
