Is there any way to find out which tape an expired backup was written. The backup data is no longer in the catalog and I can't remember if there is a report I can run which will list what tapes the backups are on.
We have a large volume of scratches so it's possible it wasn't overwritten. This is on netbackup 6.5.1.

You may try looking in the bptm log found in /usr/openv/netbackup/logs directory. If you know the date of the backup and you have a log file for that date you could search for the client. Or the bpdbjobs -report command may be of use as well.

If the image has expired then Netbackup has no information that can be used. Is it still possible to discover the tape? Yes, but you will have to import the meta data back into the catalog. probably not a workable solution since you have so many scratch tapes. You might be able to cut the number down by looking at last mount time??
sorry.

Old logs and old catalogs are probably the best bet.
If you do vaulting, perhaps you create catalogs at that time. You can load up an old catalog from before the image expired and ask it what tape the image was on. That's the most direct method.
Otherwise, maybe if you back up the logs directories, you can decipher the logs from just after the backup occurred. That might point you to the volume that was used.
Good luck,
