backup is mounting the wrong tape

we have this newly configured server and when we initiated a backup, its mounting the wrong tape, i know that its wrong because the drive being requested is AA0049 but when you execute vmoprcmd, its showing AA0047. no other backup jobs running that uses the library. after a while from the detailed status it shows that the AA0049 media is unavailable(in a DOWN drive, misplaced, or not available for another reason). the tape is present and no other backup jobs using it. it also shows that the tape drives are down, (configured 2 drives for it), but before i initiated the backup, the drives are up.

it seems that when the server is mounting the tape, its marking the drives down.

please help on how to resolve this issue.

thanks a lot in advance.

A few questions:

1) Are drives in a robot? (May need to inventory - tapes in incorrect slots)
2) Do tapes have barcode? (Can you physically tell which tapes are being mounted)
3) Do tapes already have images on them? (If not they could be re-labelled if Recorded media-id does not match External media-id - but un-tick "Verify media label before performing operation" box otherwise the re-labelling will fail)

We had an issue with a new set-up in that the 4 tape drives in the robot were 'incorrectly' set up and there was some confusion as to which was drive 1, which was drive 2 etc. When a whole bunch of new tapes were being labelled, they would load into all drives (eg 000001 in Drive 1, 000002 in Drive 2) but due to incorrect configuration media-id 000002 would be written to tape 000001 etc etc etc. We had to trash all drives & recreate in correct order & then re-label as per 3) above. This mis-match of recorded and expected media label will take the tape drives down.

Hopefully, in your case, tapes have just been manually moved in the robot & an inventory will sort it out.

hi andy,

1) Are drives in a robot? (May need to inventory - tapes in incorrect slots)
- yes drives are in a robot. TLD (two-drives)

2) Do tapes have barcode? (Can you physically tell which tapes are being mounted)
- yes tapes have barcodes.

3) Do tapes already have images on them? (If not they could be re-labelled if Recorded media-id does not match External media-id - but un-tick "Verify media label before performing operation" box otherwise the re-labelling will fail)

- yes tapes have images on it already. actually the tape media being mounted is also shared by other servers and no issue with other servers - only with this one.

we actually did the inventory and update it but still the same. there's no problem on the robot but i believe its on the server but we already did the reconfiguration on the san media server side but still the same.

what could else be wrong on this?
