Master server:   hostname masterserver,  5.1MP6,  Solaris 8
Media  server:   hostname mediaserver,    5.1MP6,  Solaris 9

I am trying to deassign an empty media B80295 on a media server mediaserver by running
the bpexpdate command on the master server. In example 1, the bpexpdate command

bpexpdate -deassignempty -m B80295  -host mediaserver

fails (host is unreachable)  whereas in example 2 the bpexpdate command

bpexpdate -deassignempty
is successfull.

Example 1:
The following command does not work.

root@masterserver:/home/root> bpexpdate -deassignempty -m B80295  -host mediaserver
Search for empty media that meet the following criteria:
        Host: mediaserver
        Media id: B80295

Continue? y/n (n)y
Could not update media list, host is unreachable
host is unreachable
root@masterserver:/home/root>

.
Example 2:
The following command works.

root@masterserver:/home/root> bpexpdate -deassignempty
Search for empty media that meet the following criteria:
        Host: All
        Media id: All

Continue? y/n (n)y
The following empty media will be deassigned:
        Host:mediaserver    Media-id:B80295
Are you SURE you want to continue y/n (n)?y
Deassigned media-id B80295 on host mediaserver
Deassigned 1 out of 510 media-ids found.
root@masterserver:/home/root>

Does anyone have an idea why the bpexpdate command
bpexpdate -deassignempty -m B80295  -host mediaserver
fails (host is unreachable) ?

It is possible to successfully run the command <bpmedialist -mlist -U -h mediaserver> on the master server (see command output below). Therefore, I believe that it is basically possible for a command run on the master server to access the media db on the media server.

root@masterserver:/home/root> bpmedialist -mlist -U -h mediaserver
Server Host = mediaserver

Hello Stefan,

If you want to blow the tape out of the database how about:

bpexpdate -m B80295 -d 0
