3 UNIX Master Servers in 3 locations running Netbackup v5.1 mp5
1500 UNIX & Windows clients running Netbackup client v4.5 mp6 - v5.1 mp5
1 Storagetek L700 tape robot - 6 fibre tape drives
2 IBM 3584 tape robots - 1 has 13 fibre tape drives, the other 24
1 Spectra Logic T950 tape robot - 48 fibre tape drives

oOne master server backs up to the Spectra Logic robot and the IBM 3584 robot with 24 drives
oThe second master server has the other IBM 3584 connected to it
oThe third master server has a Storagetek L700 tape robot
oNetwork backups are performed over the LAN/WAN to the 3 locations.
oLAN-Free and server-free backups over SAN fabric to all locations
oNetbackup clients are located throughout the province

Exercise #1
Backups are failing regularly on a Windows 2003 Server. In bullet form, list 10 areas where you would begin troubleshooting the problems with this Netbackup client.

Exercise #2

You are the technician on call for 24/7 support this week. On Friday at 5 pm you get an alert that the Spectra Logic robot has had a major failure. After much work you have determined the following:

A patch was applied by your team earlier in the day; everything was tested after and considered to have been successfully implemented
Alerts indicate 2 frames on the robot have failed, which will cause some backup clients to have backup failures that evening unless you migrate them to another robot. You have determined this will take most of the evening and by that time several of the scheduled backup jobs will already have failed.
The support by Spectra Logic, thought to be 24/7, is next business day and as a result you will not get the part until Tuesday morning. All weekend backups will be affected by the reduced tape drive capacity. You dont believe any of the leads or your manager is aware of this.

1.Write an e-mail (maximum of 1 page) to your customers explaining the status and next steps.
2.Write an email (maximum of 1 page) to your manager and whomever else you think is appropriate providing a status and what you think are the next steps.
3.In bullet form (maximum 1 page) provide your thoughts as to what action, if any, you would take until Tuesday morning when the part arrives. Include who you would involve and what communications you think may be appropriate.

cut the affected jobs over to another library.

well, you need to know the reason for backup failures (error codes etc) before you start troubleshooting it. You may have Network issue or some OS/network/backup client configuration issue on you Windows2003 servers leading to failure. Bottom line, you need to have status code before you start troubleshooting.

Since, your master servers are UNIX and I am assuming they are media servers too (you have drives and robots connected to it) it is simple to move backups from one storage unit to other by creating simple scripts.
