vStorage API - VIXAPI freeze failed with 36

I've got three VM guests failing with the same error: 'VMware_freeze: VIXAPI freeze failed with 36'

I've had a look through the forums/google but can't come up with anything, can someone assist please?

They all seem to follow the same pattern:

Did ever the backup for these guest VM completed sucessfully? Can you post the policy output

The only VM failing from the policy I've attached (problem-vm13.txt) is PROBLEM-VM13. As far as I know it has never worked.

Are you able to take a manual snapshot of the VM? Please try and let us know if it suceeds creating a snapshot.

Hi you all!

I have the same issue. I'm not able to back up 3 VM running on a ESX 4, I already create manually a snapshot with no problems.

Any ideas?

Increase vmcloglevel to 3 on the backup host, however I think this is the unable to quiesce issue.

Run a backup and follow the detail status in your vsphere console.

Disable quiescing in the policy. If that works... try to disable app level quiescing if the VM is a windows 2008+ machine.

Try disabling the VM quiesce in the backup policy "Snapshot Client Option" and trigger backup. If the backup completes with no issues try below steps.

1. Restart the VMware Tools services in the Guest, start the job with Quiesce enabled.
2. If issue still occurs, try reinstalling the VMware tools and start the job for the guest VM with Quiesce enabled in policy.
3. If it re-coccurs then you may have to disable the application quiesce for ther VM (Win 2008 & 2008 R2 only).

Disable application quiescence alone using the following process.

a) In the guest,create the file: %SystemDrive%\ProgramData\VMware\VMware Tools\tools.conf
b) Add the following to the file:

vss.disableAppQuiescing = true
c) Restart the VMware Tools Service or restart the guest.
