Hi All,
Please let me know why there is a need to add a media.i mean we can just put all media in MAP/CAP and run the inventory.
Why we add media in NBU using vmadm utility or vmadd command or GUI.

Noazara,
ita an other way of getting media update done.... without running the robot invenory process for minutes...(3-10 min depends on slots).
Vmadd will not do the scan it immediatly add the tapes into Inventory..
and you does not need to worry about Why....as long as your getting things done..
do you have any issues with Vmadd command..?

There is no need.... if you can use Inventory....

then in what cases we use this vmadd or this vmadm uitility or manually add media using NBU GUI.
sudo vmadd -m A00001 -mt hcart3 -rt acs -rn 3 -rh ABC -p 4

one that i can recall is when you are trying to restore from backup exec tape

My experience with vmadd - it is one of those commands where you must get all the parameters right or will do what it wants and not what you expect. Much better to use the GUI to add volumes. I use CLI most of the time but never use vmadd command other than discovering it's not worth the trouble.
The command above will add volume A00001 to pool 4 on host ABC, or it might not.

@WR:My query is why we need to add volumes when we can inventory them

Sorry if my answer was not clear. I will try again.
Don't use the vmadd command. Just click Inventory Robot > Update

thanks.but why this vmadd command has been invented?if we have inventory, then why this command?

You actually need to tell us why you are using the command instead of doing inventory.
Who told you to run the command? And why? It looks as if you are adding an unlabelled tape to an ACS robot. Why?
vmadd is useful where standalone tape drives are used (no robot) with no barcodes on the tapes.
Inventory can only be used when you have a robot.

I just need to know the difference.
@marianne: we have acs library.
@Nagalla: so i can either use vmadd command or either inventory

The difference:
YOU need to know and understand all relevant parameters when using vmadd. See NBU Commands manual. Incorrect parameters with vmadd will add media to volume database but result in unusable media.
Inventory will use built-in defaults to add new media to volume database.
But you already know this, right? Time to mark solution and let this go......

You have an existing way that works, running an inventory in the GUI.
If that works, why go looking for other ways that are 'harder' - leave it be.
Guess who impresses me the most:
1. Person A who knows x3 ways of doing some activity in NetBackup
2. Person B who knows x1 way to do the same thing, but explains he knows to find out about the other ways if required.
