Issue during a roll back after OS patch on the boot root mirror

Hi, We have some issue to roll back on the sane OS. We haven't a lot of experience of Veritas Solaris 10 and don't apply the correct procedure. We have realize the below steps : - Boot on the mirror - Deactivate the plex first face - Install the OS patch - It is not OK the first patches are only applied, boot the mirror first time it is OK - Reinstall the OS patch - It is not OK, decision to rool back Roll back - Boot on the first face - It is not OK, because Veritas configuration is not correct - Boot on the mirror - It is not OK, because File just loaded does not appear to be executable We are blocking. What is the solution to come back on the first face with the complete Veritas configuration ? The configuration Veritas doesn’t contain only the root volume but a lot of other data volume Could you help us because it is very urgent ? Regards

Not entirely sure what you mean by "first face", from the other steps described it sounds like you are trying to rollback the system to its original state (ie: before patching). Note this may not be possible due to the incorrect steps used when patching; however the first step is to get the system booted so you can see what has happened.

Unencapsulate the disk and see if the OS boots first. To do this:
- boot from cd-rom/dvd
- mount the root disk or root mirror (or both, if you want to try booting from both), edit vfstab, system files to mount slices instead of volumes
- umount the slices
- boot from rootdisk (or rootmirror, depending which one you edited above/want to test) and verify the OS boots OK from slices.
---- if system boots ok on slices, then look at starting vxvm
---- if system does NOT boot ok from slices, you can try booting from the other disk (also from slices); if that also doesn't work, you will need to restore from backup.

The following technote has the commands for the above steps:
TN 308958: How to boot from Solaris OS CD/DVD when system fails to boot and the boot disk is encapsulated
http://seer.entsupport.symantec.com/docs/308958.htm

If you are able to boot from slices, but then have problems starting vxvm, you will need to provide details/errors when that occurs. I would also suggest logging a call with Technical Support as that would be more appropriate if you need urgent support.

For future reference, this technote has steps to detach root mirror properly for recovery (ie: it won't help here now since the damage is already done, but you can refer to this for future patching)
TN 275374: How to preserve the root mirror disk before applying patches or upgrading

Hi Manu,

Just for simple steps, following should be your steps:

Lets assume your server is running fine with 2 mirrors & disk encapsulated with Veritas volume manager. Now you want to update some patch

a) Detach the mirror
b) Unencapsulate rootdisk & do a sanity boot to see you can boot from slices.
c) Repeat the same procedure for mirror disk to ensure both disks are bootable
d) Boot the server on slices with rootdisk
e) Apply the patches you want.
f)  Reboot with rootdisk & see if patch installation is successfull.
g) If above fails, boot server with mirror disk so that you will get old setup back

Later you can decide & re-encapsulate &mirror back...

Hope this helps..  Also do read the technotes refered by Lee above..
