sf 5.0 to 5.1 upgrade problem

Hi,

I have a solaris 10 with SF 5.0 and want to upgrade it to SF 5.1..But the problem is the volumes are manage by volume manager and the the filesystem is UFS..Is there a way to upgrade this to SF 5.1 with having problem?

Here's a sample of the /etc/vfstab..

/dev/vx/dsk/datadg/syblogs /dev/vx/rdsk/datadg/syblogs /data/syblogs ufs 2 yes largefiles,suid

/dev/vx/dsk/datadg/sybdata /dev/vx/rdsk/datadg/sybdata /data/sybdata ufs 2 yes largefiles,suid

Hi Howell, I sure hope we can get you upgraded without any problems :)
Firstly, spend time to go through the Release Notes, followed by the Installation Guide. It contains detailed upgrade steps.

you'll find a link to the Release Notes right at the top, and the Installation Guide a bit down under Storage Foundation Guides.

I have tried reading the release notes and installation guide..But I keep getting upgrade was not complete and V-5-2-3410 error upon reboot...Do I need to convert the ufs to Veritas filesystem before doing the upgrade?

Also, the root disk is encapsulated on this setup...

V-5-2-3410 simply means "upgrade was not completed"

Do you know what the error messages were when you attempted the install?
Did you remember to unencapsulate root?

p. 180 of Install Guide:
Planning the upgrade
....
Determine if the root disk is encapsulated.

p.200:
Upgrading Veritas Storage Foundation to 5.1 using upgrade scripts
(OS upgrade or encapsulated root disk)
This section describes upgrading to the current Veritas Storage Foundation if you
have an encapsulated root disk...

p.201:
It is important that you follow these steps in the specified order.
To begin the upgrade ...

Ignore references to vxfs and VVR and follow the steps as listed.

My root disk is encapsulated and mirrored...After running upgrade_start script, i need to reboot because of the root disk encapsulation but the problem is that vxconfig doesn't start anymore which i think is needed to perform the upgrade_finish script..It also says that if cannot verify if there are open volume since vxconfigd is not running and i do get an upgrade was not complete error

Well I know this may be a little late , but I think you don't have to change file system to upgrade the Storage Foundation. Storage Foundation is Volume manager and File System, and since you are using usf, I am guessing you want to upgrade Volume Manager.
