I got this same error on one of my servers last night. I've tried Googling the error code but I haven't been able to find anything useful. Is anyone from Symantec listening?

A bit more information is required....

1. Is everyone on this thread using BESR 2010?
2. How often do you see this error?
3. Is it ONLY incrementals that fail with this error? What about base (full) backups?
4. Do you have any other backup products installed on the same machine? For example, is anyone using Mozy (http://mozy.com/)?

THSYSAD
Not applicable
I got same error.

1. BESR 2010 (9.00.95656)
2. Every time when start job.
3. 1st time, base backup is OK. Inclimental is  no good.
4. No other backup software, previously we used Backup Exec.
    After un-install, we install BESR2010

I have question.
I have installed Exchange server 2003 on same server.
and free HDD capacity is 2GB. Is it enough ?

Using BESR2010 MS (not sure what build).
Has only occurred once on an incremental.
BE 12.5 agent also installed but jobs are staggered so they shouldn't conflict.

Here my details:

1. BESR 2010 (9.00.95656)
2. Occasionally
3. Only with Incrementals
4. Backup Exec 12.5 installed too on SBS2003 servers

In the past with BESR 8.5 and the same configuration all was working good.
So I think there is a problem with BESR 2010.

Thanks for all your replies. So it seems that the problem is intermittent and ONLY affects incremental backups.

It's possible that there is a conflict with a 3rd party application. Could you all go to a command prompt on a server that is affected by this problem and issue the following command: FLTMC INSTANCES. Please post back here with the output.

What, if any, anti-virus application is everyone using on these servers?

Here the log and the situation on my server.

It's a SBS2003 server with Symantec Protection Suite 3.0 installed.
So Endpoint Protection 12 for Small Business is the anti-virus application installed.
The BESR 2010 was installed in December and I've got this error three times: 2 January, 13 January and 20 January during an incremental backup.

Output of the FLTMC INSTANCES command:

Can a couple of people look in Backup Exec System Recovery.log.txt in the following folder:

\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Symantec\Backup Exec System Recovery\Logs

and copy & paste the full error you see when an incremental fails.

I have also had two failed incrementals with BESR 2010.  I am backing up two hard disks on one server running Windows Server 2003.  The backup destination is a NAS device which it connects to via \\ipaddress\sharename.  The issue has only been with incremental backups thus far as the software has been installed for twelve days total.

FLTMC INSTANCES returns No filters/instances found.  I am using Trend-Micro Worry-Free Business Security.

Backup Exec for Windows Servers 12.5 is still installed, but I have disabled the SQL server instance for it and all related services.

Below is the full text copied from the Backup Exec System Recovery.log.txt file.

I can immediately run a manual incremental without issue, and the next incremental runs without issue.

There are several reasons why this error message occurs:

Cause A: Hard drive problems, such as file system errors or bad sectors.
Solution A: To prevent this problem, run the Windows Disk Error Checking Utility (chkdsk /f from a command prompt) or try checking the option "Ignore bad sectors during copy" while the Backup Wizard is in progress.

Cause B: Multiple USB devices that are connected to the computer.
Solution B: Disconnect all devices except for the USB destination hard drive.

Cause C: The USB drive is not seen in Windows
Solution C: Check the status of the drive in Windows disk management. If the drive is not seen or is seen incorrectly in Windows, BESR cannot use that drive. This is common more with USB drives. Contact the manufacturer of your drive if this happens to ensure that your BIOS and Windows settings are correct. Sometimes simply unplugging then plugging in the USB drive can bring it back online.

Cause D: A SAN (Storage Area Network) Volume may be causing conflicts.
Solution D: Update to the latest version.  Frequently changes are made to be compatible with SAN volumes.  Or if possible, disconnect the SAN to determine if there is a conflict with the SAN.

I would encourage those affected by this issue to open a case with Symantec technical support so that this can be investigated further.

Has anyone found a solution/more info on this issue?  Dev T's solutions are not relevant to my situation.

I contacted Symantec tech support and was told that because I am using the 60-day trial of this software they will not help me.  I need to 1) purchase a license for the software and 2) purchase a support contract for the software.

I hope I'm not out of line for refusing to purchase a non-working product with the promise that they will try to fix it later.

Any further help is appreciated.

I hear ya NVN. I am trying to qualify the product to see if we are going to use it and they are making the decision for me.

Backup Exec System Recovery Management Solution 2010 problems:

I have been a loyal Symantec Partner for years. In the past I have had excellent results with both BEWS 12.5 and BESR 8.5 and I would highly recommend these products!

This all changed when I migrated from BESR 8.5 to BESR-MS 2010. BESR-MS 2010 appears to have been designed to manage very large environments. My environment is small, consisting of 5 Windows Servers, 10 XP Pro and 10 Vista Bus workstations. Currently I have spent more than 200 hours of determined and dogged effort trying to get BESR-MS 2010 to work in this small environment. It almost works, but not reliably. I have attached an external USB drive to 10 workstations. I have created a separate backup policy for each of these workstations and have applied this policy to a single workstation. Since these workstations are writing backup data to the locally attached USB drive I have scheduled all of these workstations to backup at 8:00 PM and I have set the, “Distribute strategy randomly across (minutes)” to zero. However, backups attempt to run at random and multiple times throughout the day.

At this point I am totally exasperated! Is BESR-MS 2010 full of bugs, or am I just not understanding something?   Please Symantec; I am a Symantec fan and steadfast Partner.

If I am to compete against ArcServ I need help! A training video explaining top-level implementation concepts would be infinitely helpful!
