I had backed up a perfectly working system on windows 2003 and then converted it to a .VHD successfully with no problems. But When I attached the .vhd file to the hyper-V server and boot up the virtual machine, I get the message
Boot failure. Reboot and Select proper boot device or Insert Boot Media in selected Boot device.
I even recreated the system backup and converted it with the same exact result.

That doesn't look like it's the same problem I'm having. I backed up from a physical server, then converted it to a virtual machine for Hyper-V. When I try to boot up the virtual machine, the virtual machine would say
Boot failure. Reboot and Select proper boot device or Insert Boot Media in selected Boot device.

Are you setting the system drive as active during the restore process?
