BESR 8.5 GUI hangs when trying to assign backup job to RDX 500GB cartridge/drive

The title says it all.

Fresh install of SBS 2003 with a Tandberg Data RDX drive, 500GB Tandberg Data cartridges. The BESR GUI hangs when attempting to assign the backup job to that location.

Update: Just now noticed that the BESR GUI hangs when I open it, the main GUI that is. In the status bar at the bottom it shows "Scanning Disks" and then hangs.

No corresponding error or warning events are logged.

No other backup software is installed on this box.

I am having the same problem, and found that ti does it to any USB drive. I have found 2 workarounds, and when talking with tech support today they said they have recived several calls. I am able to duplicate this on 3 different machines all from different manufacturers.

Workaround 1

Share the drive with write permissions, and access it through the UNC path(ex: \\MACHINENAME\SHARENAME\" ). This forces it to think of it as a local disk, not a removable disk, which seems to be the problem.

Workaround 2

Load the driver file to make it a local disk. Read the first link, and download the file on the second. I tried this, but didn;t want to go with such a permanent solution, becuase I think Symantec will fix this soon.

I just recieved this from Symantec Tech Support.:

I created this case to address the other issues with the RD1000 you pointed out today in our telephone conversation.  Our backline team has reproduced this issue and it has been escalated to development.

Quoting document 315695:

If you feel this issue has a direct business impact for you and your continued use of the product, please contact your Symantec Sales representative or the Symantec Sales group to discuss these concerns.

In other words, we're not going to do anything about this issue unless lots of important people squeal loud enough.

I think BESR together with RDX/RD1000 is a really good match but we have had so many issues (some of them not related to BESR) that we are having second thoughts about using these two products together.

We have had BESTR since it was first released as live state. I like the concept, but we too have had many weird things happen with it. I too have been having second thoughts and have been trying other products thinking about changing over.

Using \\SERVER01\U$ worked for me. It is a work-around but at least it's working.

Symantec has currently identified an issue with the Dell PowerVault RD1000 and BESR 8.5.1. This issue is outlined in the technote below.  However, currently the Dell PowerVault RD1000 is a supported device.

If you are experiencing an issue with Backup Exec System Recovery 8.5/8.5.1 and the RD1000 please contact Symantec support and open a support ticket.

You may also subscribe to technote document number 315695. Please refer back to this document periodically as changes with the status of the issue will be reflected in the technote document below:
