There is not enough space to create the offsite copy

Hello, We are receiving the following error message: Error EC8F1FA5: There is not enough space to create the offsite copy on H:\BESR. Error EBAB03F1: There is insufficient disk space to complete operation. Details: Source: Backup Exec System Recovery. The offsite USB disk is not full - but may not have enough space to process the next job? (On site backups are currently 220GB. The onsite has roughly 50GB free, the offsite has about 75GB free.) The off-site disk mentioned is actually larger than the on-site destination and we have retention settings for in place that should mean that less data than the size of the disk is retained. There do not seem to be any optins for controlling the off-site size or retention, or to clear the off-site copy and recreate it. Please advise.

This doesn't quite add up. Could you clarify?

If you have set your backup to retain 1 recovery point set (minimum setting - obviously), you will need to have enough space to store 2 recovery points sets. BESR needs to create the new backup successfully before it will remove the old backup set. Does that make sense?

Hello, please let me clarify for you:

The onsite backups take up about 220GB of a 300GB disk.  There is about 50Gb free on the onsite backup destination.

The offsite backup takes up about 220GB of a 320GB disk.  There is about 70GB free on the offsite destination.

The offsite disks are clearly larger than the onsite, as posted before.

The onsite disk does not give an error that there is not enough space, but the offsite copy does, as above.

The option for retaining backup sets is set to 2.

The offsite USB disk is not full - but may not have enough space to process the next job?
IF the offsite copy is generated by copying the data to the destination and then removing an older set, then it is possible to understand how the drive does not have enough space to process the job, even though the offiste has greater capacity than the onsite.  Hence "There is insufficient disk space to complete operation."

IF the onsite works by removing a set before creating a new one, then again it is possible to understand these symptoms.

It is strange to receive the above error when the offsite disks are 20GB larger.

Please advise as to how / what can be done so that we do not receive the error regarding the offsite backup.

James.

James,

To help me understand this better, could you post screen shots of both the onsite & offsite backup destination folders (via windows explorer)? Please ensure that it's listed so that we can see the file sizes and the free space available (View-->Status Bar in windows explorer).

Thanks.

Hi the issue here is that the onsite copy is not reportign errors, but the larger offsite copies do.

I understand the n+1 space requirements for procesing, but still fail to see why the offsite gives an error when there is indeed enough space.

Symantec technical are now dealing with the issue.

Thank you for you help, but this forum is very slow to respond.
