I think that error is a red herring as I got the same error before I tinkered with the ndmp.cfg file. We've taken it out now anyway.

This was fixed using the hotfix referred to in http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH144007

Yes, that fix worked! By installing the hotfix and excluding C:\Documents and Settings the backup has finished successfully in just under 6 minutes as opposed to 5 hours! Many thanks Matt
