BESERVER.exe broken after joining CAS

I've tested this with 2 different servers in multiple varying ways. All servers are 2008 R2, fully patched and running BE 2014 SP2 with hotfix 227745 installed. 

THE ISSUE:

After making making servers manged to my single CAS server I am no longer able to start all serverics on the managed server. Opening backup exec fails and Even ID 57082 is logged: "The Backup Exec Server Service did not start.  An internal error (-1) occurred in object 51. ". Followed by Event ID 279: "A process crash has been detected. Faulting application: beserver.exe 14.1.1786.1093 - Faulting module: ??? ??? - Fault offset 0  - Exception code  0".

Troubleshooting:

Multiple reboots have been done over the course of troubleshooting at different times. I began by pushing out BE server from the CAS, selecting the option to make the remote server managed and applying updates after installation. I was met with the issues noted above after reboots. I then removed Backup Exec fully (check data locations and registry). I then installed as a standalone server. Then through add remove/programs I add the option to be managed. Both have the same result: beserver.exe can't start. I ran bestart.bat from prompt, the message stated that it could not find the file (beserver.exe). The file does exsist in program files. I've also attempted to use different log on credentials. Both work as a standalone server both fail as a managed server.

Open a cmd and browse to the BE directory. Run the following command and pls post the output:-

beserver.exe -console

...do the services start up normally when the designated MMS server is configured as a stand-alone?

...you might also want to do a search on the MMS server's registry and do the following:

* regedit.exe --> HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE --> SOFTWARE --> Symantec --> Backup Exec and
* look for a key called Database Server.
* Change the server name in there from your CASO to the MMS.
* Restart the MMS services thereafter.

I used to do this when running into issues with the MMS and did this to manualy remove the CASO's DB details and point the MMS back to itself. Just grab a copy of the System State before doing anything...obviously don't do these steps if the MMS already points to itself.

Once done, try adding it to the CASO server again.

I located the reg key [string] at: HKLM | Software | Symantec | Backup Exec for Windows | Adamm ... It's listed as "Database Server Name". In fact it does/did point to my CASO server. I made the edit and rebooted. The result was the same. I went back to the registry to change my edit and found the the key was missing altogether (which was pretty odd). I ran a repair and now it's back. 

Other items to note for troubleshooting: I ran a repair on .net and renamed/recreated msgq...dat files.

Stop any running services on the MMS server and remove the msgq. dat files. Check if the services restart properly or not.

If not, then either the MMS server isn't able to communicate with the CASO server or the CASO server information is incorrect in the registry.

I would start off by focusing the communication bit. Are you able to ping via name & IP address from the MMS to CASO ? Are you able to map the CASO as a network share on the MMS and access it without being prompted for credentials ? Is port 3527 open both ways ? Are you able to right-click the MMS server and establish trust from the CASO server's UI ?

I've already attemted to remove/recreate the msgq files without success. I renamed them .bak and rebooted/reran services. The files created new versions of themselves (.dat). This did not remedy the failure to start beserver.exe.

Both servers can communicate between each other (ping/share files). Both firewalls are disabled with no 3rd party AV running. The server shows MMS server shows up in the CASO but there is no option to establish trust.

You mentioned there could be registry items misconfigured on the CASO. Where should I look there?

The option to establish trust would be present by right-clicking the MMS from the CASO's Backup & Restore tab.

The MMS isn't the same as a a server you backup. Managed media servers do not appear in the "Backup Restore" tab.

While working with Advacned Support last night oone of the servers began all it's services (for no apparent reason). This stumpped myself and the representative on the call. We ended the call with my POA being to set certain Winodws polices for the account starting be services. I'm the process of completeing that actoin but the fact that the one of the MMSs' is running and not the other  makes me doubtful that this will be a final resolution.  This makes no sense at all.
