I have been trying to decide the best way forward here to create a watertight system of backing up MS Small Business Server 2003 Standard (with Exchange 2003), using an overnight full back up to USB hard disks that are swapped over every day. I am not desperately concerned about multiple versions of backups (one per USB disk is fine). I *am* concerned that whatever I have backed up has the best possibly of being restored.
A recent scenario I had was an SBS box that I attempted to do a Directory Services restore from. I inventoried my USB disk (fine) only to discover BU Exec was unable to catalog the data. All the B2D data was there but BU Exec wasn't able to catalog it all. It was the only backup I had and was not enjoyable (I had to reinstall fully). I want to be sure I am doing everything possible toprevent this from repeating.
I can't be the only person trying to do this - what do others do in this situation?
