Backup exec 10D can't find HP MSL 2024 tape library

Hi all,

    i am using backup exec 10D for windows, have HP MSL2024 library with 24 slots, use fiber connect to HBA card on server, but i find in backup exec10D find the library like a tape machine in stand-alone drives, not in robotic libraries,  OS Windows 2000 server, do i need install driver for library, where is driver? the library is new!

Open Windows Device Manager and check if the Medium changer appears in the list.

Make sure medium changer is configured with Microsoft Drivers.

Is this device in the HCL of BE 10 ? What tapedrives do you have in the library ? Only LTO3 is listed in the HCL: http://www.symantec.com/business/support/index?page=content&id=TECH46109

If you are using any FC switch to connect backup server and tape library, make sure the connections are proper and you have included changer also in zones and activated the Zone Set after saving it.

Also stop and disable Removable Storage Manager service on the backup server.

In Device Manager of Windows, ensure that Medium changer is detected and Microsoft drivers should be installed for it which will show the changer as UNKNOWN MEDIUM CHANGER.

Then to install Symantec drivers for the tape drive run tapeinst.exe from C:\Program Files\Symantec\Backup Exec

Hi, thank you, but no FC switch, only FC connect backup server and library directly, the server no other Storage manager service.

Expand medium changers and look for the changer there. If it is not listed as Unknown Medium changer change it to use microsoft drivers. Once dun run device configuration wizard and see if BE can configure the library properly.

in fact, backup server use FC directly connect the tape driver which is only one in library, i think maybe is problem. we use it very  simpleness.

we use a HP LTO1 tape driver before, we just use the HP MSL 2024 library, it's working OK, work as auto loader driver.

Got your issue now ,so you are saying though it iss library it is still showing as single tape drive in backupexec.

You can do few steps

1 Please right click on drive & click on enabled so it will be disabled once done please remove the drive

2 Ensure BE is fully patched by going to live updates

3 Then please look for the following services if they are present please disable them

   -  HP Insight Storage Agents
   -  HP Insight Foundation Agents

   -  HP WMI Storage Providers service

4 Please shut down the library & the backup server & then power on library first & wait for it to be intialized & then power on Media server & then see if that makes difference

Hi,

If this is an LTO4 drive in the MSL2024 then it isn't supported as per the BE 10.x HCL below:

So if there is anything else but an LTO4 drive in the MSL it will not work...no sense in trying to troubleshoot further.

Unfortunately, your only recourse here will be to upgrade. You can upgrade either to BE 2010 R3 w/SP2, or if you've seen and played around with BE 2012, upgrade to this w/SP1a.

If you have support in place with Symantec, it's simpy a case of calling them and asking for the upgrade licenses.
