Backup exec 2012 backup of remote Exchange 2003 computer

Hi.

I want to backup a remote Vmware Virtual Exchange 2003 sp2 Server which is running on Windows 2003 R2.

Before I push out the Windows Agent to the Server has the Exchange 2003 management utility ys got to be installed on the Backup Exec 2012 Server first.

No, if you wish to backup your exchange server like a normal remote agent (i.e. using Agent for Windows), you don't need Exchange Management Utility.

There are however a bunch of requirements/permissions which you need to make sure are met/granted in order to allow you to perform GRT restores - http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH64095 this technote listes most of the requirements for backing up Exchange database.

To backup Exchange 2003, you would not need any Management console to be installed. Only need to have proper permissions in addition to VMWare permissions -

1. Backup Exec Account used for backup must have an active mailbox on the exchange server.
2. The mailbox should not be hidden from the Global Address List
3. The account is a Domain Admin and must be added in Exchange System Manager as an "Exchange full Administrator"
4. Backup Exec "Logon Account" is an explicit member of Local Administrators group in the Exchange Server
5. Backup Exec "Logon Account" is "Unique" inside the Exchange Organization.  See  "How to confirm that an Exchange mailbox name is unique within the Exchange organization when configuring Backup Exec to back up Exchange mailboxes"
