Backup of external systems

I keep failing a remote backup on network of two external DNS servers to my internal backup server (on a 2003 domain). The servers are on a workgroup, and are given sufficient permissions on the firewall for all services. On an authentication test, the logons come back successful, but on a test run, they fail. The error states it could not reach the remote backup exec. The remote backup exec is installed and running properly. I theorize there is a trust issue, but as this is production, I cannot verify. If anyone else has a similar setup and can assist it would be appreciated.

Please paste the exact error message that you receive?
Can you ping this remote server?
Is the port 10000 open on both these servers?
