Hello all- we're running Symantec Backup Exec 2010 R3 and have been attempting to restore one of our users mailboxes from our mail server. Both are running Server 2003 and Backup Exec is fully up to date. Every time we try to run the restore job we get this message-
Error category : Resource Errors Error : e0000393 - Cannot extract mailbox messages from the Exchange backup. Review the job log for more information. For additional information regarding this error refer to link V-79-57344-915
I followed all the suggestions covered in this article- http://www.symantec.com/business/support/index?page=content&id=TECH146433&actp=search&viewlocale=en_US&searchid=1396611596843 but I still had the same result. I've been attempting to troubleshoot the issue myself and came across something that suggested that the mailbox store needed to be offline for the restore to work correctly. Is this accurate? It would be difficult to take our Mailbox store offline for any stretch of time.
Anyway, I'd appreciate any suggestions you might have!

...have you tried to duplicate the IS to disk first (instead of running th erestore) and then restoring from that?

Hello,
What version of Exchange are you working with?
Where are the backup sets located? Disk or tape?
If on a tape, could you please ensure that you have sufficient space for staging?
I understand that you have alredy referred to http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH146433. Apart from that could you please check if the conditions stated in the following article are met or not? http://www.symantec.com/docs/HOWTO24128

We are using Exchange 2003. The backup sets are located on tape. The hard drive we are using has over 200GB of free space, which should be more than sufficient for a restore.
I checked the other article you linked to and we've met all the relevant conditions, as far as I can see.
Thanks for the quick reply!

Could you please provide the entire error message? The error message given above is the generic error message. There should be more description attached to it below it in the Job Log.
One more confirmation, you mentioned a 'hard drive'. I am hoping that its an internal drive which holds the Temporary Staging location as per the Tools > Options > Restore > Granular Recovery Technology section.

This is the only other info on the error message-
Error : e0000393 - Cannot extract mailbox messages from the Exchange backup. Review the job log for more information.

And yes, we are using an external HD for the staging as that is our only option currently due to space issues. Is that going to cause problems? The HD is directly attached to the server.

Hey folks, sorry we've had a mountain of stuff to deal with and I've not gotten a chance to look at this again. I think that Craigs suggestion will definitely be our best bet though.
Thanks again for all of your help!
