Exchange Restore

Hi,

I would like to restore a folder with some mails inside from a specific mailbox.
To do this I used the restore configuration.
BE stages Exchange in a temporary folder, and begins the restore.
The restore status is "success", but only the folder is restored, no mails normaly inside are present.
I don't understand why

Could you help me, or explain to me the procedure to do this restore ?

Hi Craig,

OK, My problem is now resolved.
What I have done :

1) Media retention (if not it takes so much time for staging and get some read problem)
2) In exchange server, uncheck hidden mailbox status (if not can't find mailbox inside global address book)
3) In Backup Exec make a exchange redirection to the mailbox itself (it seems it is because the user never be connected to his mailbox)

The job complete successfuly

Hi,

Sorry for my late answer ...
After testing your solution, the restore job skips all mails inside the folder should be restored.
I have attached the job log.

If you have an idea about what's the matter with this ?

Couldn't see the exceptions...this sometimes gives an indication of what's wrong.

Sorry Eric,

It's stating those skipped files are hidden...if you take a look at the path you can see that.
I found this article which might shed some light on it, and the guy mentions installing SP2 for BEWS 12.5. Since you're not using it, see if you can get hold of the latest SP for your version, load it up, and push the agent out to the Exchange server. That MIGHT cover you going forward. He also mentions

Are you restoring into an RSG? Which version of Exchange are you using?

First thank you so much for your answers.

Our Exchange version is 2003 Version: 6.5.7638.1 (SP2 + WSUS Updates)
Backup exec is on V.11.d rev 7170.

I haven't got Remote Group Storage.

I am now testing to restore mails after made visible this mailbox.
But it takes long time before to get information

After test I can't change hidden file status, because it is on a tape.
I have tried again, with same result.

Here is the job configuration, may be some thing is wrong ?

OK...you're not dismounting your Exchange IS are you? You're leaving it up and running while you restore to it?

Yes it is exact Craig.

I hope it is not necessary to stop Exchange IS to restore a global mailbox folder.
As BE is running, it stages IS in a temporary folder, and just to do this it takes 1 hour.
I can't make exchange unavailable during our business hours (08:00 AM-10:00 PM).
If it is the case I can only do this during the week end.

OK, where is that temporary folder?
Exchange doesn't need to be dismounted at all to restore directly into it.

The location is in backup exec server Drive D:\TEMP
It is just because staging takes a lot of place

I have tried to restore an user mailbox and ....

"Symantec Backup Exec for Windows Servers has activated the mailbox receiving this message. After verifying that all other mailbox contents have been restored, you can delete this message. For more information, please contact your system administrator or refer to the job history for job <Restore test>."

Is there something special with global mailbox ?

Hello Craig,

Yesterday I have planed a backup with hidden mailbox unchecked for this mailbox.
Backup successful
For the restore job I get error message totaly différent:

I have look to symantec support, but nothing with my problem relation

An other little question about hidden mailbox:

is it better to set them as visible, or normaly no issues constated for granular restauration ?

Hi Sumitomo,

Not too sure hey! IN this case now I'd suggest getting hold of Symantec support themselves.
See what the resolution is and then post it here and close the query =)
If those web sites above don't help then that will be the best thing.
