How to Backup Terastation (NAS)?

Hello,

We have a Terastation attached to our network. It is not joined to the domain. 

I'm trying to back it up to tapes, but can't find a way to do it. When I specify the location in user defined selection, it doesn't take any details and allow me to log in. When i joined the Terastation to domain, it still does not take any details. I tried using domain\user, user, terastation\terauser, terauser and nothing works. I mapped the terastation to the server backup exec is installed on and still nothing.  

How to do it, any ideas? Do I need to have a license to backup NAS?

Hi there,

Adding it to the domain is best, as it allows you to use the same username/password you use for the BE services.

Add in that user in the form of: domain_name\service_account on the NAS, making sure it is the same as your BE service account.

From there you should be able to put in a \\ entry in your selection list. Alternatively map to your BE media server and try again.

Please let me know what is the version of backupexec is that version 12.0 sp5

Please confirm if you are able to access the NAS from the backup server using start run & then ip address of NAS & then check it that work

If it is not working then you need to ensure that as will be out of the scope of this forum

Now if it is working then please go to backup selection & then you will see userdefined selection were please right click on it & then add the ip address & click onok to save it

Now try to access it , while doing so if it gives access denied then please use like root account by making one in backupexec or use that account by which you manage you NAS

Hello CraigV, Thanks for reply. 

I tried that already. As i said, I joined it to the domain, and then creat few new accounts which worked to access the drive on windows. I used the fallowing combinations:

user

domain\user

terauser

terastation\terauser

and neither of them worked. I also mapped the drive to the server, still the same situation. 

Also, when i was creating user defined selection, i tried using ip address and the hostname of NAS but no result.

What about from windows are you able to access the nas from start run & then by typing the ip address of NAS  & then accessing it

So, BE version is 12.5 rev 2231. 

Now, i can map and access the drive without any problem.

In user defined selections i specified two items. One of them is the \\ip\folder which i want to backup, the second one is \\ip only. Now, when i try to access first item, i'm getting access denied message. When i try to access the second one, it expands fine and i can see folder list and then when i click on the folder i'm getting access denied message.

...check the permissions on those shares on the NAS and try again. You can copy a file to the share from within Windows first to make sure this part works.

Here is a screen shoot. If click on the CSAchive folder i'm getting Access denied message. If i expand info folder, everything is ok.

...check permissions on those, and try accessing it from Windows...if it succeeds, problem lies with BE.

As siad by craig check it from windows & also would add on it as try doing copy paste of 500m b to 1 gig data vice versa to see if that works or has some permission issues while doing that if that works fine

Then to resolve the issue with BE please go to sgmon by going c-program files-symantec-backupexec-sgmon.exe & then check 1 3 boxes & cpature to file at bottom & then try to acces it from BE again & then  once you get same error stop debug & then collect the sgmon.log from c-program files-symantec-backupexec -logs folder

I've chceked the permision and everything seems fine. On my computer i can access nas using windows authentication, but if i enter the same details on BE throws Access denied.

I can see that for some reson it comes back with eumd01 which has nothing to do with our backup... I've done the nslookup for .21 and it comes back with eumd01 even though eumd01 is on totaly different subnet. Can it be the reason of the problem?

it seems we are making the connection attempt. windows says 1219 multiple conntection to server by same name and it fails

Solution

close all open sessions and/or maybe reboot the NAS then try again.

if the error still occures, looks like you need to clean up so of his network and routing

ok, so now:

1. I removed terastation from Domain

2. I have few new local accounts on the terastation, which work perfectly when i access NAS from any system. 

3. I rebooted NAS

4.  Tried to access using local accounts as Terastation and Host\Terastation

5. I created new folder and allowed all local accounts to access it. 

Still nothing. This is the log...

Do i need the license to backup NAS?

Hi

You don't need any license to backup NAS one thing more you can try is try disabling the NDMP service on NAS & see if that helps

You do need a license to backup the NAS, dont spread the wrong info!  You need technically one RAWS agent or one RALUS agent per device you are backing up.  Without it, you are not in license compliance.  

Now if it affects something technically, I can't help you...
