How to back up the Backup Exec server?

geraghty

Running BE 2010 R2, on a Dell server, with 4GB ram, Windows Server 2008 R2 standard (64 bit).

What's the recommended way of restoring the Backup Exec server itself after hardware failure or similar (DR scenario, for example)? Other than taking a daily image of the machine, is backing up the SQL BKUPEXEC and the Program Files folder enough to restore properly, retaining all the job details, and media catalogs?

I've searched all over the place for a proper recommended solution to this, but can't find anything, so apologies if this is already answered somewhere.

All configuration details will be kept in DATA folder.

Catalogs will be available in CATALOGS folder.

If you have a copy of these two folders available, then you can get all the existing configuration and catalogs on new installation of BE.

You can find DATA and CATALOGS folders in BE installation directory.

Backup Exec stores its database in the DATA folder and the catalogs generated by the backups are

saved in the CATALOGS folder. These directories are located at X:\Program Files\Symnatec\Backup\

In DR scenario you can rebuild Bakcup Exec with the help of the above directories.

Cheers guys, that's great. It is a reasonably simple process to restore too? Can you install backup exec and point it at the existing data? Is it necessary to first install SQL server and mount the databases, or is it possible to have the Backup Exec install procedure pick up this data?

If you ever need to re-install BE, then these are the steps

- Install same version of BE on the new server

- Stop the BE services including the SQL instance

- Replace the Data & Catalog folders from the previously copied ones

- Restart the services
