is this error going to be resolved, or am I going to have to throw Backup Exec 8.6 out of the window?

why isn't there any support for the particular problem?

again, the error is

OFO: unknown error: 0x1
OFO: initialization failure on: "\\MACHINE\C$"

as discussed here:

It could be SP2 that is killing you.  The v9.1 SCL lists only through XP SP1, so I'm sure that v8.6 goes no farther than that, perhaps it won't even support SP1.

(There is no support because v8.6 has been end-of-life since January of 2005)

So yes, it looks like you will have to find a replacement for v8.6

I'm getting the same error message on Windows 2003. I do recall seeing a message telling me a patch was required when I installed either the remote agent or OFO. I have not yet been able to find the patch, however. Could someone please point me to it?

By the way, the backup does appear to work on Windows 2003 (I haven't tried a restore, but it does verify successfully), it just says it failed because of an unknown error.
