Removable Disk Backup Easier?

Many of our clients have moved away from tape backups because of their (perceived) unreliability. One client likes to use External USB Hard Drives. He has three 120 GB HDD's and about 60 GB of data on two servers.

With BE 9.1, we tried setting up a Monday night full backup with differentials Tue - Fri and they unplug the USB HDD and take it off site Saturday morning. And, then, plug in the 2nd week USB HDD.

BE 9.1 was never pleased with the plugging and unplugging and the workaround to make it happy was too involved for such a critical function.

BTW, the third USB HDD is for a monthly backup.

Can 10.0 do a better job of automatically and eleganty handling the swapping without complaining?

Any tips for setting this up to make BE 10 most happy?

TIA!

Backup Exec v9.1 and v10.0 has Hot Swappable device wizard. This wizard allows replacing or adding storage devices without having to reboot the media server. You can change the USB HDD by running this wizard. Refer the following technote for step-by-step information on how to use this wizard.

I hearded of this problem using USB devices with the 9x version. I currently use firewire drives on version 8.6 with success. For testing, i did a test using the USB port instead and the backup was slower and finally failed for an obsure reason.

I never had to reboot the media server when swapping drives connected on a firewire connection. This solution is much more reliable then thoses tapes solution. No more need to verify the tape, rotate, clean and replace them as in the past.
