We want to use Father/Son Media Rotation Strategy to back up our system with
full backups on every thursday in week, increments on M,T,W,F and
cycle of 4 weeks instead of 2 weeks as described in manual(new full back up
tape every week in periond of
4 weeks). So, we are going to use 8 tapes total.
To set up Father/Son Media Rotation Strategy, we set up two Jobs-1st.full
bakcup taking place on thursdays
and 2nd. increment backup taking place on M,T,W,F.

Create new Full backup Job:
1. Go `Job Setup` tab
2. Click `New job using Wizard` left side bar from `Backup Tasks` section
3. From wizard in 'Backup Selection' section, I select all drives, Mic.
Exchange Mailbox/Public Folder
all Mic SQL Servers databases(instead of checked box for SQL options, it
appeard crossed line box).NEXT
4. Name backup job as MCILFullBackup and backup set as MCILSet. NEXT
5. Choose device to be `ARCHIVE 1` and Media set to be `Media Set 1`. NEXT
6. In `Backup Overwrite Method` section, I choose `Overwrite media` option
and the the name to be to the media
`Media created 1/23/2007 10:10:58 am`. NEXT
7. In `Backup Options` section we select `FULL-Back Up Files-Reset Archive
Bit` backup method and
check radiobutton for `yes, verify after backup`. NEXT
8. In `SQL Options` selection we selec `Full-Back up entire database or
filegroup` back up method and
`None` for Consistency check before/after backup. NEXT
9. In `Exchange Options` section we select `Full-Database & Logs` back up
method for MEServer and
`Full-Back up messages-Reset archive bit` backup method for MEMailboxes.
NEXT
10. At `Completing The Backup Wizard` section we choose `No, schedule the
job to run later`. Finish
11. Schedule Options window comes up and under `Edit Schedule Details` we
set todays date for "make the schedule go into effect. In Time Window
the `start no earlier than` to 11:00pm and the `no later than` to 11:59pm.
In Week Days we check all thursdays for every week in the month. OK ->
Submit

Create new Increment backup Job:
4. Name backup job as MCILIncrementBackup and backup set as MCILSet. NEXT
5. Choose device to be `ARCHIVE 1` and Media set to be `Media Set 1`. NEXT
6. In `Backup Overwrite Method` section, I choose `Overwrite media` option
and the the name to be to the media
`Media created 1/23/2007 10:10:58 am`. NEXT
7. In `Backup Options` section we select `Incremental-Changed Files-Reset
Archive Bit` backup method and
check radiobutton for `yes, verify after backup`. NEXT
8. In `SQL Options` selection we selec `Differential - Back up database or
filegroup changes only` back up method and
`None` for Consistency check before/after backup. NEXT
9. In `Exchange Options` section we select `Incremental-Logs` back up method
for MEServer and
`Incremental - Back up changed messages-Reset a archive` backup method for
MEMailboxes. NEXT
10. At `Completing The Backup Wizard` section we choose `No, schedule the
job to run later`. Finish
11. Schedule Options window comes up,under `Edit Schedule Details` we set
todays date for "make the schedule go into effect. In Time Window
the `start no earlier than` to 11:00pm and the `no later than` to 11:59pm.
In Week Days we check M,T,W and F for every week in the month. OK -> Submit

Afterwards, I look in `job monitor` tab and the jobs are listed with `Job
Status`=Scheduled, Elapsed Time and Byte count empty,Priority = Medium u.c.

Put a media in drive.

Next day, after backup job MCILIncrementBackup should have run at 11:00pm, I
see in `job monitor` under `Job Status`= Loading Media. I assume that backup job has not been done. In `Alerts` view
there is alert at 11:00:35pm telling:
"Overwriting allocated media '4MM000001'.

Media Overwrite Protection is configured to overwrite allocated media.

Please consult the online help for more information on allocated media."

Following with 2 Data Maintenance Information Alerts at 3:00am at night.
Why isn't it backing up? What does the overwrite alert exactly tries to
tell?

Thank You for any help

Did you label your media? if so, did you leave them in the scratch media set, or did you move them to the production media set?

Leave them in the scratch set and let BackupExec move them when it opens them.

Set the Gloabal Overwrite Protection to "Partial" and you should be good to go

Thank You for replay,

No,I didn't labled. It was labeled by default name and put in Media Set 1. I did label them with Full and Increment now. Afterwards, I moved them to scratch media set. Do I have to do anything specific to "let Backup Exec move them when it opens them"

How do I set Gloabal Overwrite Protection to "Partial"?

Thank You

I moved them to scratch media set. Do I have to do anything specific to "let Backup Exec move them when it opens them"

No, BackupExec will move them to the appropriate media set when it opens them. I would leave only the one to be used tonight mounted so that it is the only one that BackupExec can see, so it won't grab the wrong one

How do I set Gloabal Overwrite Protection to "Partial"?

Tools\Options\Media Management

You should also make sure the option to "Overwrite Reusable Media in Target Media Set Before Scratch Media" is selected.
