V-79-57344-34110 - AOFO: Initialization failure

V-79-57344-34110 - AOFO: Initialization failure on: "Shadow?Copy?Components". Advanced Open File Option used: Microsoft Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS). Snapshot provider error (0xE000FED1): A failure occurred querying the Writer status.

Systems:
Windows 2003 Srv x64 with Exchange 2007 SP1 + Rollup 1 for SP1 + BE Agent
AND
Windows 2003 Srv 32Bit with Backup Exec 12 with Exchange 2007 Management Tools 32Bit SP1 + Rollup 1 for SP1
We're getting this error when trying to backup Exchange 2007 Mailboxes. Mailbox backup fails. The only way to get a working backup at this moment is to remount the Mailbox store daily before the backup runs. Then exactly one backup will work. (Altough we have access denied errors - see other post)

Symantec Support (maintenance contract that we actually pay for) is "working" on the problem for almost 3 months now. We email us every few days (depends on how long it takes to respond for them). The last "advice" of them is to deinstall the Service Pack 1 on the Exchange Server and the Media Server (BE12) and reinstall SP1 again. I rather not want to do this on a production server. Anyone else has has VSS Problems? Is it really necessary to reinstall SP1 on Exchange? (We had the same problems showing up when SP1 wasnt even installed back some months ago when we got our Exchange Server)

Hello,

First of all...It is not at all recomended to use Advance open file option on any DATABASEs like Exchange, SQL, Oracle...etc. AOFO is ment for OPEN FILES and not OPEN Databases..

Best practices for Backup Exec 12 Advanced Open File Option : support.veritas.com/docs/298299

Best practices for Backup Exec 12 Agent for Microsoft Exchange Server : support.veritas.com/docs/298300

Uncheck AOFO and try to run the job....

Hello,

thanks for the suggestion. But: Advanced Open File Option is definitely OFF (unchecked) in all our job setup pages. We don't even have this option licensed.

Maybe THAT is the bug?

Hi,

Exchange 2007 by Design Backups up using Snapshot Technology. If the Snapshot Writers are not stable we get the following ERRORS:

1. A failure occurred querying the Writer status
2. V-79-57344-34110 - AOFO: Initialization failure

Please follow the Technote : support.veritas.com/docs/278212
and check the status of the Writer...
Make sure that all the Writers are STABLE.
We may also reboot the Server and try backups.

Regards
