VSS errors while backing up system state on Vista machine

I have been backing up a Windows Vista system remotely without any problems for a couple of months, but having installed the latest NVIDIA drivers, I now get a long list of errors when backing up the system state (see below). None of these files exist. How can I get rid of the messages? (I have tried rolling back the NVIDIA driver but it has no effect on the problem.)

What happened if you backup the system state using windows backup utility?

I can find no way of doing this with Vista. The Backup and Restore Center is very vague about what gets backed up. I could try creating a system restore point but I am not sure this is the same as backing up the system state.

Any suggestions?

I will suggest you to contact Microsoft.  Somehow during the install and uninstall something got stuck in the registry, that the System State still thinks the files are there when they are actually not.

I have reported the problem on a Microsoft forum but have not had a reply as yet.

In the meantime I completely reinstalled Vista and RAW32 on the machine in question. The first backup worked without any warnings. However, a day or two later, this warning appeared in the BackUp Exec log:

VSS Snapshot warning. File c:\windows\system32\wmdconn.cpl is not present on the snapshot.

Again, the file in question is not actually present on the disk. Also, while there are a lot of 57481 Backup Exec events in the system log, there are none concerning the VSS problem.

What happen if you reboot the Workstation and run the backup again?  Does it shows the same message?  Are you running Backup Exec 11d Rev 7170?

Because of the various software installations and updates installed on this workstation over the past few days, there have been many reboots between backups (which are run nightly). The reboots have no effect on the problem.

Also, I manually created a system restore point on the earlier Vista system (the one with all the NVIDIA files allegedly missing from the shadow copy). That had no effect either.

The version of Backup Exec being used is 11D 7170. It's running on a fully up-to-date copy of Windows Server 2003 R2.

BTW, it seems that Backup Exec is making this comparison since the problem is reported only in the job log. What is BE comparing the contents of the shadow copy against?

The message is reported by VSS to Backup Exec.  VSS is a Microsoft module.  In order to get to the bottom of this issue, we will need to enabled debug and research the output of the debug logs.  I will have to suggest you call into Tech Support and open a case for this problem.
