Exchange Provisioning Task in Error Status

I have an issue with a Provisioning task which does not appear to be functioning. The server itself was upgraded to 9.0.4 about 3 weeks ago and everything was working fine until yesterday when I tried to run a manual Provisioning Task.

I got a strange error (can't exactly rememeber the details) stating that the task did not have sufficient privileges to run when trying to execute the task. Considering that nothing has changed in the environment, the services (and later the server itself) were restarted and that is when the task reflected the status to be in an error state.

The event log has only revealed event ID 41445 which mentions that the Provisioning task has not completed a run. Apart from that, there doesn't appear to be anything else specific to this issue.

I have searched for any information regarding this and so far have not been able to find anything.

Any help will be appreciated.

Did you recently install the EV Client on the EV Server? Can you verify your InstallPath in the registry?

Manually add the 'InstallPath' and 'InstallationDate' String registry values to the Enterprise Vault registry hive: 

32-bit:  'HKLM\Software\KVS\Enterprise Vault\Install'

64-bit:  'HKLM\Software\Wow6432Node\KVS\Enterprise Vault\Install'

Ensure the value of the 'InstallPath' registry value is the location of the Installation directory for Enterprise Vault, by default this would be:

32-bit:  C:\Program Files\Enterprise Vault

64-bit:  C:\Program Files (x86)\Enterprise Vault

The 'InstallationDate'  registry value should be in the format:

12/10/2011 12:21:32

Couple of follow up questions:

  1. What version of exchange environment is provisioning task running against?
  2. Is provisioning task using VSA like remaining tasks in environment?
  3. Does the provisioning task reports contain any error? The're stored in <EV Installation Folder>\Reports on EV server that is holding provisioning task.
  4. If you try to take a DTrace of Provisioning task while trying to run the provisioning and share the logs with us, that should help.

Follow up answers:

1. Exchange 2007 is running in the environment.
2. Yes it is using the VSA.
3. The provisioning task reports simply stop. The last file that was logged shows no errors, after that there are no others logged for provisioning.
4. Can't run a DTrace from EV itself, getting a "required component is missing from the Administration Console installation" error trying to open the console.

Have run a command line DTrace which returned the following:

Dtrace which you pasted is empty, so i would recommend you to take another dtrace and also let us know the event description.

I am not sure at this point if below technote is applicable in your case (as MIN said, the DTrace log is empty & you're using 9.0.4) but worth a look:

I am unable to try and run the task from the console as now I am unable to access it, so all I have been able to do is to run DTrace from the command line. I

s there any way that I can try run the task from the command line?

I'm not quite getting the same errors logged, however I am getting a "parameter 'exePath' is invalid" error which I would presume will be a related issue to that article?

That is why I said it was similar.  In looking at the trace you posted I didn't see InstallPath under \Install from the registry.

It is quick and easy for you to check.

Also, another thing you could try is re-running Setup.exe for EV 9.0.4 to re-register everything.

Looks to me like the client has been installed on the server, and that's mucked everything up on the server from.

 

I'd suggest a backup, and reinstall of the EV binaries.

The EV binaries have been reinstalled and now the service and the console are now running/accessable however no archving is taking place and users' mailboxes are starting to fill up.

When running the provisiong task manually, event ID 41110 would be logged just prior to completion of the task. The root of that appeared to be SQL entries that contained null values which has now been fixed but now I am seeing ID 41282.

All mailboxes are enabled and I don't see any reports being generated for the task. The reporting is set to full.

Issue appeared to be related to the fact that the EV client was installed on the server which has subsequently been removed.

So the archive tasks appeared to run during the night but now users are unable to send items manually to the vault and if I try to do a sync on one of the archive tasks, I get an "access is denied" error.

If I check the event log, I see a pile of 3196 errors after the task has been run.
