FSA File is not a placeholder

ENV: Windows Server 2003 R2 EV 2007 (7.5) / Windows Fileserver 2003

the fsa task reports some warning on some files:

Event ID 41168

Validation for placeholder <myfile> failed.

Reason: File is not a placeholder.

----------------------------------------------

The File is NOT a placeholder and was also not changed by EV to a placeholder.

 ideas?

1. Search the files using Archive Explorer to verify that they are in the archive? At least at this point you can get to any critical data.

2. If you can get to one of these files try completing a restore. Are you able to do so.

3. Were these problem files archived on the same date? List any other common attributes that these files have.

1) The file is not in the archive because it never got archived (the error happens in the first run)

2) not "possible" due to not needed, the files is still the original and NOT a placeholde

3) The Task was run and did half of the files and left the others untouched with the warnings

I think it must have to do something with Offline Attributes and reparse points...

I have not seen this but:

Are there any other filter drivers running such as Anti-Virus? Do you have DoubleTake running?

Try to disable these first any other filter that may be running first. See if that helps. Dtraceing the FSA task may shed some light.

seems to be a known issue.

Solution is to put the "EVPlaceholderService" itself into ExcludedExes registry key.

Can u please elaborate on this solution?  We've attempted this registry addition and we're still receiving the warning message within the Windows Event Viewer.

Do you have antivirus running or another app that scans or monitors files? Try to dTrace the task to check what's happening.

You will need to dtrace the placeholder service to properly use TN http://seer.entsupport.symantec.com/docs/287761.htm (step 3. under troubleshooting) if you look at the dtrace log and you see that the files in questions are being recalled nearly immediately after being archived, you may be able to see the exe that is doing the recall and then exclude it.

Hello all,

I ran dtrace and the messages that were showing up in the Windows Event Viewer are showing up in dtrace.  Below is a sample of my dtrace log output which shows the message we get for each archived file.  At the bottom I included the Registry info.
