How to upgrade from Enterprise Vault

Hey guys,

it would be my first time to upgrade EV, in this case 10.0.3 to 10.0.4

I already read the upgrade instructions, but they sound like "straight to the book".

Perhaps I need some additional information.

In short our environment:

  • Arc01
    • File system archiving and alias holder
  • Arc02
    • Indexing
  • Arc03
    • Archiving for journaling and mailboxes
    • Provisioning

So I would stop all services in advance. Afterwards take a full backup of the EV databases on the SQL server.
Then I can start with the setup from the installation medium on Arc01 because it is the site holder. When it's finished, I guess it will start the directory and storage service because the EV upgrade will update the SQL databases.

But I'm not sure how to proceed...

  • shall I start all the services on Arc01?
  • shall I start directory and storage service on Arc02 and Arc03
  • shall I just start the setup on Arc02 and Arc03?

I think afterwards I have to execute the single FSA upgrade, correct?

Thanks in advance.

Regards,
woelki

Doesn't matter.

I upgraded from 9.04 to EV10SP4CHF2 in one go (11 different environments)

First upgrade to EV10SP4. Verify EV works fine. Make backup of SQL DB's. Install CHF2.

It does have some fixes you want!

Hello Woelki.

If the servers are all in the same EV-site, you need to upgrade all servers at the same time. If you have seperate sites (i.e. seperate directory database), you can do them one at the time.

I suggest you do the following when running ARC01/02/03 in same site (1 directory database):

Set EV in backupmode, both indexes and stores.

Stop EV services, and disable the Admin service.

Backup databases

Run setup on all 3 servers (setup of 10.04)

Reboot the ARC01 when asked. DO NOT REBOOT ARC02/03 yet

When ARC01 rebooted, start the Directory service (verify admin service is set to automatic again). Verify eventlog for event database is upgraded. (reboot can take a while, patience)

When upgraded, reboot ARC02/03, wait until you have desktop again.

ARC01, start storageservice. Verify database is upgraded. When ok, do the same on ARC02, when that is ok, do the same on ARC03. Make sure the database upgrades finishes properly, and the fingerprint database(s) are also upgraded

Start other services, verify functionality. when ok, backup databases again.

Verify in documentation how to upgrade FSA agent.

Clear backupmode, verify again.

Hi GertjanA,

thanks for the clear instructions. I will give you feedback about the result.

Is it recommendable to wait some days regarding a planned Installation of the last hotfixes so that the system can "calm" down?

The upgrade to EV10.0.4 worked fine. Users experience is great.

Thanks again, for the help:
Yesterday has been late... so I'm going to install the hotfixes next week.

Good to hear.

Can you check one of the answers as solution? That way the question is set to 'answered', and people don't need to open it to assist, and others can look to see if the answer is helpfull.

Hotfix install is quicker btw. Do make a backup of the databases, but the CHF (and I believe CHF3 is the last one available) install is fast.
