Migrating Enterprise Vault 8.0 to 9.0

I am looking for the best way to migrate Enterprise Vault 8.0 to 9.0.  I am not only upgrading but wanting to move the Enterprise Vault to a 64-bit server.  My thinking is that I will need to first upgrade to 9.0.1 and then migrate this over to the new server.  Can someone please advise me if this is the best way to go about this.

So first you would need to do an inplace upgrade to EV 9, I would recommend at least EV 9.0.3 or 9.0.4 that was first released, then you can move to EV 9 on 64bit hardware.

And while you are at it, why not just go to EV 10?  You could do it in one maintenance window and be up to date.

Thank you for your feedback.  It is very helpful.  I also have one more question.  The database for EV is on a 2005 SQL Server and we are wanting to move it to a 2008 SQL server.  Would it be best to move the database over to 2008 before we upgrade or after?  Is there a process for doing this that you would recommend? You can do it either before or after the upgrade it really does not matter but just check the compatibilty charts to make sure:
