Provisioning groups, Policies and PST migration

Hi, I'm fairly new to the whole EV arena so please excuse my ignorance on the following questions:

1) I currently have a provisioning group which has the 'Whole Exchange Organisation' as a target but the 'Archive mailboxes in this provisioning group' box unchecked. Am I correct in thinking that if I check this box then the mailboxes won't actually start archiving (or get effected in any way) until the mailboxes are 'Enabled for Archiving'?

2) As part of a fazed rollout, I want to start archiving certain mailboxes but not import thier PST archives yet. How/where are the settings so that when I enable a mailbox for archiving the PST files get imported?
(I've looked in the PST Migration policy, but can only see options that relate to how the PST is migrated rather than disabling the migration)

Hiya,

For 1, you are correct if the box is unchecked the users will not be archived.  Even if that box is checked and the users are not enabled they will  not be archived.

Here is a good resource for provisioning groups:
https://www-secure.symantec.com/connect/articles/enterprise-vault-granular-provisioning-best-practice

As for 2, Enabling a mailbox for Archiving will not affect their PST's.  PST's have to be intentionally targeted.

Check out these articles on pst migration:

Thanks for the confirmation on the first point, I thought that was the case but wanted to run it past someone before enabling archiving in the prov group for the entire Exchange organisation.

With respect to the PST migrations, apologies if this is answered in the links (not had chance to read them yet), but I thought the EV plugin imports the PST's providing you've defined the settings in the relevant policy?

Yes, EV will import PST's based on the policy.  But, for example, with Client Driven you need to enable the user for Client Driven migrations.  This is in addition to enabling the user for mailbox archiving.
