then try to upgrade from ev9 to ev9 sp1 crash with sam error during early install just before removing all the old files. Deployment scanner is all green.
error is:

Any ideas? Any ideas what could be the difference between ev9 and ev9SP1?

Q. Have you migrated hardware / Windows OS during the move to 9.0.1?
Q. Did you previously have the SMTP components configured?
The SMTP archiving components are not supported on x64 operating system.

I wonder if you could attempt a dtrace of the upgrade
Is AV Disabled during your upgrade?
03-09-2011 06:24 AM
I have attached the dtrace and the install logs. Nothing in the Dtrace that I can use, the install log is more explicit but cannot understand it.
It is an in place upgrade, sql is based on a cluster, vsa is owner of all DB.
No AV installed. no error in the apps, sys, ev event viewer.

As Karl mentioned above, SMTP archiving is not certified on a x64 bit system. The error is referring to the SMTP component. Have you disabled this prior to the upgrade?
You can find out how to do this from the "Setting Up SMTP Archiving" manual. I've also copied the text from this doc below:-
To stop the SMTP archiving process
1 Log on to the SMTP archiving computer.
2 Do one of the following:
■ Click Start > Programs > Enterprise Vault > SMTP Archiving
Configuration
When you are prompted, enter the full path to the SMTP archiving
configuration file, for example C:\Program Files\Enterprise
Vault\EvSmtpArchiveConfig.ini
You are then asked if you want to disable SMTP archiving. Enter Y.
■ Or open a command prompt window and change to the Enterprise Vault
installation folder.
Then unregister the SMTP archiving process by entering the following
command:
EvSmtpArchiveConfig config_file /U
Where config_file is the name of the configuration file. The default file
is EvSmtpArchiveConfig.ini.
SMTP archiving parses the configuration file and reports any problems. If
the parsing is successful, SMTP archiving indicates that SMTP archiving is
disabled.
Try to upgrade again.

I am definitively on Windows 2008 R2 and SMTP archiving looks like the issue. EvSmtpArchiveConfig.ini is not configure. Should I configure it or just delete the config file prior to the upgrade. pr. before running th before running the upgrade again.
We are only doing Exchange archiving.

I had the "SMTP Server" feature installed, I removed it, reboot and I tried again the setup.exe again: Same error

If you've not run the configuration for SMTP archiving previously then there should be no reason to re-run it to remove it. In fact you can't - as far as I'm aware it won't run on an x64 system.
I would imagine the issue is with the installer given that the SMTP components used to exist its possibly failing on its removal/upgrade as it knows not to put them down on an x64 OS.
I did a quick search of the knowledge base and couldn't find anything - I'd suggest a support call to assist in the safe removal of the SMTP components.

All good. After removing the Windows smtp service and rerunning the setup from ev9.0, I got the error attached, mentionning missing smtp libraries. Using the KB below solved the problem.
Thank you all for your help. We can confirm SMTP Archiving component is not working for W2k8 R2 (x64).
