If you use collections as well there are times when it says the file does not exist, but the actual error is that the cab file it belongs to is locked and ev cannot access it, it's a long running but and will be resolved at some point in time but requires a significant rewrite of some of the collections and storage code to resolve

Could you be a bit more clear?  Do you mean the folder path is correct for your vault store partition?

It sounds like an archived item was deleted but not the shortcut or placeholder.  Is this for Exchange or FSA?

Not necessarily part of this thread, but in 10.0.1 we've started on improvements when accessing the CAB files.

Extract from the Updates_En.htm:

Improvements to concurrent CAB file access [Ref 11465, E2409023]

Changes to the use of file locking have improved concurrent access of CAB files. This change can result in better performance, for example, when rebuilding indexes, where multiple threads attempt to access the same CAB file to retrieve items.

I would recoment you to run EVSVR in verify mode on the partition where the file is missing and post the log here.
