Can some please confirm what the main purpose of the PureDisk environment is!
Is it there to replace tape at the data centre? or is it to simplify remote office backups?

How about "yes"
Puredisk in it's original form is a remote office solution (hence the name PureDisk Remote Office Edition).
Starting in 6.5 (and NBU 6.5.2) you can also leverage Puredisk as a backup target in the datacenter for your Netbackup system with the Puredisk Deduplication Option. This is the same product, but you can now use it in a different way- it's a software alternative to products like DataDomain.
Whether it "replaces tape" is something that I am sure many people will enjoy screaming about from one side or the other. IMHO it really depends on what you are using tape for.
