Are Cold Catalog Backups still necessary? (NBU 6.0 MP6)

It seems that people vary on this answer. I am having problems with my cold catalog backups (hot ones running fine), and am wondering if these are still necessary?  I heard that symantec was going to eventually phase these out.

Thanks!!

The positive parts are:
- you don't have to "register" the catalog-tapes with hotbackup. Just inventory it.
- differential and cumulative incremental backups are possible now
- you use the whole tape. before only full backups were made and allways written at the begin of the tape
- if no catalog-tapes are available, the scratchpool-tapes where used
- handling is now via the catalog-backup-policy easier includet retentions etc.

Info: When you reuse the old catalog-tapes for the new hot-catalog-backup, you have to label these tapes again, because the magnetic media-id on the tape is "NetBackup" and won't be used for "normal" backups. But for this you have to uncheck the checkbox for "verify before performing label operation".
