I wanted to continue the thread i created but it has been locked.

As per advice i am at the following stage:
I ran a catalog backup to external USB on the old environment.
On the New VM i built as the same host name - i installed the same software (NBU 6.5.5) to the same location.
I then added a disk of the same drive letter as the external USB and copied over the catalog files and DR recovery file.
I then went through the Catalog recovery wizard and it completed successfully.
Now under db\images on the new server i have all my old servers now under folders.
As you said Marianne - is was hoping to follow your instructions by "This will enable you to browse for backups, preview required media, followed by import of relevant media on media server in new environment"
However when i go into the backup archive and restore window, edit client list to an old server, it always comes back with "does not contain any backups for client xxx using policy xxx as requested.
So i cannot select a server / folder and preview media to run an import of that tape in my current environment.
Am i missing a step?

I think the idea was that you would do this at the time that you initially asked...
What were the retention periods on the old server?
Image expiration would kick in as soon as NBU was started on the new server.

If they havent expired then the only other option is that you don't have the install path correct .. or that the original had the db folder redirected somewhere either using the registry keys or using altpaths.
You would need to be able to look at the old server to double check that though.

Hi Everyone,
Apologies for the delay. The Catalog was failing - i believe because i thought the Alias name would work, which it didn't.
I re-installed the Netbackup software using the fully qualified Domain Name and then re-ran the catalog recovery successfully.
I am now able to see the images in the catalog to be able to preview media, which i can now run on my current environment doing the 2 phase image import.

You were told over here that the hostname needed to be the same, right?
And you even said so in your opening post??

I dont want to take credit for anything here. I just wanted to say it was the FQDN.
I was under the assumption the same name / alias would work, and not use the FQDN, when installing the software.
My Mistake, and i do appreciate everyone's help on here.

It has been mentioned elsewhere in this forum, several times, and I think mph999 mentioned it again most recently, that when installing NetBackup for a catalog recovery that one must use exactly the same name that was used in the source install.
If a shortname was used in the original install, then use the same short name in the recovery install.
If a longname was used in the original install, then use the same long name in the recovery install.
.
And I believe mph999 (maybe someone else) also mentioned that if NetBackup was installed using a 'shortname' then it's not too difficult (with solid experiance) to change the 'domain' suffix when recovering - but if a long name was used during the original install then a change of name suffix is not possible in the recovery environment without the assistance of certified "catman" specialists.

Now, here's a couple of things that I don't remember anyone asking or suggesting... which are...
When we can't remember, or it's simply not known (poeple have left - site build docs lost - site build docs incorrect - site build docs not detailed enough - putty logs lost - no putty logs - etc...) whether a short or long name were used in the original build, then... I have two questions:
1) If the old original environment is still available, then how does one determine, with 100% surety, whether the original installation used a short name or a long name?
2) If the old original environment is lost, but we do have a valid catalog backup to recover from AND we also have the matching "DR" file... then is it possible to determine from the "DR" file, with 100% surety, whether the original install was performed using a short name or a long name - before we install NetBackup using the required short or long name?
3) There is a third spin-off question... but I'll wait to see what the answer to the above two questions are...

The answers and solutions to these first two questions above would be extremely beneficial to many of us... because we could all then build in a 'pre-install' check/step/stage to our documented DR recovery procedures... to... determine whether to use a long or short name during the install of the recovery environment.
