File Backup for Oracle Database Files

Contigo
Level 2

We backup the Oracle database files (on the OS - Windows/Linux) presenting them through file system through NetBackup. We have Oracle native datapump backups also run.

The file system size with database files are huge. And we are not sure, if the flat file system restoration would work for the Database. If this will not work, then we will go with the datapump backups alone ignoring the file system level backup.

Can you please clarify on this?

Regards,

Contigo

File level backup of online Oracle database files will backup files in inconsistent state. Databases will not startup after restore. So, there is no point in taking these backups. File level backup of database dumps is fine. Best option is to use NBU agent for Oracle for online, hot database backup.

Agree with Marianne, there is no point in backing up open database files. I would suggest excluding the database files from the file backups

Is this some sort of snapshot backup ?

Thanks Everyone. I will ask the backup team to exclude DBF files from file system backup.

Nicolai - This is not snapshot backup. Just a file system level backup.
