Hi, our master server and media server are all NBU 7.1 on Windows 2008 R2. We have a few Hyper-V servers (Windows 2008 R2) and want to configure to back up the VMs. We want to back up at Hyper-V level instead of VM host level. My question is:
Is it possible to back up the VMs via backup LAN?

According to this post: https://www-secure.symantec.com/connect/forums/hyper-v-vm-backup-size you have configured your Hyper-V servers to be SAN media servers.
So, data is backed up via SAN and not via LAN, right?
Not sure why/how you want to config a backup LAN?

Previously we configured the Hyper-V servers as SAN media servers so they can back up the VMs by themselves.
However, we tested and found it does not work in our environment. Due to some strange hardware issue, when the Hyper-V node (SAN media server) backs up VMs via FC connection by its attached tape drives, the backup job will hang.
We spent past two months to troubleshoot this and in the end we gave up. Now we plan to back up the VMs in the Hyper-V nodes by another physical media server which is through LAN. The test backups vis production LAN work fine but we want to explore if it is possible to back up via backup LAN. This is because currently in our environment most of the physcial clients are backed up via dedicated backup LAN. Thanks.

This can be done by adding entries in host files.

Definately it can be done by host entries , but be more careful and follow all the required procedure to accomplish it ;)
Ohhh. Seems you want Dedicate backup network to be prioritized instead of Prod network (correct me if my presumption went wrong)
You could use Required_interface and check bptm and bpcd logs if it is moving backup traffic to backup network
For Windows clients use Host Properties in the GUI.
Universal Settings -> Use specified network interface. (IP of backup network)
The Client's Registry will be updated (HKLM -> Software -> Veritas -> NetBackup -> CurrentVersion -> Config)
